Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of commercial underwriting experience
  • Experience delivering technical training, coaching, mentoring, or conducting quality reviews
  • AEC or DEC in Property & Casualty Insurance or an equivalent insurance education
  • Strong technical underwriting expertise
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills
  • Proven ability to coach, mentor, and transfer technical knowledge
  • Strong auditing and quality assurance mindset
  • Collaborative mindset with a strong team-oriented approach
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • CRM, CIP, or FCIP designation is considered a strong asset

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary technical resource for underwriters, providing guidance on underwriting decisions and the interpretation of underwriting guidelines
  • Review and approve underwriting standards to ensure they accurately reflect policy wordings and meet program requirements
  • Collaborate with underwriters to develop and maintain insurer underwriting guidelines
  • Partner with the Team Lead on projects, including evaluating underwriters' authority levels
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of underwriting processes and best practices
  • Deliver technical insurance training to underwriting staff
  • Coach and mentor underwriters to support their professional development
  • Assist with the implementation of new underwriting standards, procedures, and best practices
  • Partner with leaders, trainers, and other key stakeholders to facilitate the onboarding and development of new employees
  • Conduct underwriting quality audits and file reviews to assess adherence to underwriting guidelines, identify trends, and promote consistent underwriting practices
  • Provide coaching, training, and recommendations based on audit findings to support individual and team development
  • Manage and underwrite a portfolio of new business, renewal, and endorsement transactions within established underwriting guidelines and delegated authority levels
  • Review and approve underwriting files that exceed underwriters' delegated authority, within your own authority level
  • Underwrite and assess commercial insurance risks as required
  • Review and interpret policy wordings, endorsements, and underwriting guidelines
  • Partner with the Product Line Manager (PLM) to review files that fall outside standard underwriting authority
  • Collaborate with colleagues to identify current and future underwriting opportunities while sharing technical expertise across the team
