About The Position

Koniag IT Systems, LLC, a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking a Technical/Scientific Writer to support KITS and our government customer in Annapolis, MD. This position requires the candidate to be able to obtain a Public Trust. The Chesapeake Bay Program Office (CBPO) is a regional partnership responsible for the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay, with partners including multiple states, Federal Agencies, and Universities. The US Environmental Protection Agency leads Federal efforts to protect the Bay and coordinate restoration efforts. The CBPO Data Center supports decision support tools, data sharing, and scientific computing. Koniag Government Services (KGS), an Alaskan Native Corporation, needs a skilled Technical and Scientific Writer to document the Chesapeake Assessment and Scenario Tool (CAST), a web-based modeling tool for estimating pollutant load reductions. The CAST application will be enhanced with a new spatially enabled visualization feature, and the Technical Writer will work with scientists, developers, and stakeholders to update documentation for this GIS-based version. Initial tasks include updating the CAST website, documenting modernized resources and analytical tools, and overhauling user guides and self-help resources. The writer will also refresh visualization components to improve user experience and support decision-making. Work will be coordinated with CBPO stakeholders. The candidate may also undertake other Technical Writing duties within the CBPO Data Center, such as transforming complex environmental science into clear reports, explaining scientific topics by translating data from models and water quality testing, and updating information within the CBPO Data Center content management system regarding applications, processes, and strategies.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate complex information that is action-oriented to help readers understand a concept.
  • Understanding audience awareness and having the ability to tailor the depth, language, and structure of concepts.
  • Use simple, direct language and quantitative metrics.
  • Ability to organize documents cleanly and clearly.
  • Maintain uniform and consistent terminology, abbreviations, and formatting styles.
  • BA/BS degree.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a relevant field (or fields) such as: Information Systems, Environmental Science/Services, Environmental Monitoring, GIS/Geospatial Sciences/Mapping, Environmental Management (compliance, sustainability), Data Analysis/Data Science, Water Quality/Conservation.
  • Must be able to obtain a Public Trust.
  • Must speak fluent English.

Responsibilities

  • Update and revise the CAST website by detailing modernized resources and improved analytical tools.
  • Modernize CAST’s user experience through coordinated upgrades that will document support tools and visual analytical tools.
  • Overhaul user guides and self-help resources.
  • Reorganize and update model documentation to improve discoverability.
  • Refresh CAST’s visualization components—including charts, mapping functions, and comparison tools—to deliver more intuitive, interactive, and accessible scenario outputs.
  • Transform complex environmental science into clear, usable reports for data consumers, Chesapeake Bay restoration stakeholders, and the public.
  • Explain scientific topics by translating data from computer models and water quality testing into clear and usable facts.
  • Update and revise existing information with the CBPO Data Center content management system that provides information to Chesapeake Bay Program partners, technical issues related to Best Management Practices, Watershed Model processes, and other watershed management strategies.
  • Update and revise existing information with the CBPO Data Center content management system that provides information about Koniag developed and maintained applications for environmental data dissemination, water quality, and general business applications.
  • Update/maintain various IT Documentation pages.
  • Document the Chesapeake Center for Collaborative Computing (C4) Administrative Section.
  • Document CBPO Organization and Structure of Network/Infrastructure areas.
  • Document CBPO Data Center Application Architecture and Standards.
  • Document Development Team Processes and Standards.
  • Document Software Configuration Management.
  • Document the General Application Development Portfolio.
  • Document the Technology Roadmap Strategy.
