About The Position

Koniag IT Systems, LLC, a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking a Technical/Scientific Writer to support KITS and our government customer in Annapolis, MD. This position requires the candidate to be able to obtain a Public Trust. The Chesapeake Bay Program Office (CBPO) is a unique regional partnership responsible for the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay, involving multiple states, federal agencies, and universities. The CBPO Data Center supports decision support tools, data sharing, and scientific computing. Koniag Government Services (KGS), an Alaskan Native Corporation, staffs the EPA Data Center at the CBPO and has an immediate need for a skilled Technical and Scientific Writer to document the Chesapeake Assessment and Scenario Tool (CAST), a web-based modeling platform used for environmental planning. CAST estimates pollutant load reductions and costs, and will be enhanced with a spatially enabled visualization feature. The Technical Writer will work with scientists, developers, and stakeholders to update documentation for a GIS-based version of CAST, including website updates, overhauling user guides, reorganizing model documentation, and refreshing visualization components. The role may also involve transforming complex environmental science into clear reports, explaining scientific topics, and updating information within the CBPO Data Center's content management system for various applications and processes.

Requirements

Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
BA/BS degree.
3-5 years of experience in a relevant field such as: Information Systems, Environmental Science/Services, Environmental Monitoring, GIS/Geospatial Sciences/Mapping, Environmental Management (compliance, sustainability), Data Analysis/Data Science, Water Quality/Conservation.
Ability to communicate complex information that is action-oriented to help readers understand a concept.
Understanding audience awareness and having the ability to tailor the depth, language, and structure of concepts.
Use simple, direct language and quantitative metrics.
Ability to organize documents cleanly and clearly.
Maintain uniform and consistent terminology, abbreviations, and formatting styles.
Must speak fluent English.
Successful candidate is subject to a background investigation by the government and must be able to meet the requirements to hold a position of public trust.

Responsibilities

Update documentation of a GIS-based version of CAST that incorporates spatially explicit data.
Update and revise the CAST website by detailing modernized resources and improved analytical tools.
Modernize CAST’s user experience through coordinated upgrades that will document support tools and visual analytical tools.
Overhaul user guides and self-help resources.
Reorganize and update model documentation to improve discoverability.
Refresh CAST’s visualization components—including charts, mapping functions, and comparison tools—to deliver more intuitive, interactive, and accessible scenario outputs.
Transform complex environmental science into clear, usable reports for data consumers, Chesapeake Bay restoration stakeholders, and the public.
Explain scientific topics by translating data from computer models and water quality testing into clear and usable facts.
Update and revise existing information with the CBPO Data Center content management system regarding Best Management Practices, Watershed Model processes, watershed management strategies, and Koniag-developed applications.
Update and maintain various IT Documentation pages, including the Chesapeake Center for Collaborative Computing (C4) Administrative Section, CBPO Organization and Structure of Network/Infrastructure areas, CBPO Data Center Application Architecture and Standards, Development Team Processes and Standards, Software Configuration Management, General Application Development Portfolio, and Technology Roadmap Strategy.
