About The Position

Mohawk College is undertaking a major digital transformation through the Banner Business Transformation Project, reimagining its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, Banner, and related processes to enhance the student, faculty, and staff experience. The Technical Instructional Designer will be a key contributor to this initiative, designing dynamic, user-centric learning experiences that support learning and change adoption across the institution. Working in close partnership with the Change Management team, subject matter experts, and cross-functional teams, the incumbent will lead the creation of accessible, multi-modal training content tailored to the needs of diverse audiences. Learning solutions may include e-learning modules, interactive simulations, job aids, end-user and superuser guides, instructional videos, and trainer materials designed for virtual, hybrid, in-person, and self-directed learning environments. A critical component of this role is the development of train-the-trainer programs, equipping SMEs to confidently deliver effective, consistent training during and after implementation. Drawing on adult learning theory, instructional design best practices, and a deep understanding of educational technologies and content authoring tools, the Technical Instructional Designer will transform complex technical concepts and business processes into accessible, engaging, and results-driven learning experiences. They will also develop evaluation strategies to measure the effectiveness of the training to ensure learners have the knowledge and skills required for full adoption of the new ERP system.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 3-year diploma/degree or equivalent in education, in adult education, training & development, educational technologies, instructional design, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certificates or courses in the following: Content authoring tools / software such as: Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate or equivalent. Educational Technologies such as Kaltura, ThingLink, H5P, Camtasia, etc. Multimedia design.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience with communication tools such as MS Teams.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience designing a train the trainer program.
  • Minimum of 5 years practical experience in/with: Instructional Design: design, development, delivery and evaluation of user training. Learning/Educational technologies. Consultation and client service supporting multiple levels within an organization. Project Management. Multimedia design: digital teaching/learning content (text, graphics, images, audio, video, etc.) and online publishing methods.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience working within a learning management system (LMS), preferably Cornerstone, and document sharing platforms such as SharePoint.
  • Working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.

Responsibilities

  • Design of end-user learning materials for Mohawk's ERP system (Banner) in consultation with business SMEs
  • Audit existing training materials to assess gaps and learning needs for the system implementation.
  • Develop standardized templates and formats for all Banner training materials, ensuring alignment with Mohawk's branding guidelines and relevant corporate policies.
  • Select appropriate software and technology tools to suit content and instructional requirements.
  • Partner with business SMEs and the project team to design role-specific training paths and curriculum that align with the needs of different departments and user groups.
  • Create a range of multi-format learning resources, including e-learning modules, simulations, job aids, end-user and super-user manuals, instructional videos, and trainer guides for virtual, hybrid, in-person, synchronous, and asynchronous learning environments.
  • Ensure all training materials are accessible and adhere to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
  • Ensure all training materials can be easily updated by business SMEs post system implementation to capture upgrades and continuous improvement.
  • Design assessments and evaluations to measure the effectiveness of training programs.
  • Ensure learning materials are compatible and compliant with Mohawk's Learning Management System (Cornerstone).
  • Develop train-the-trainer program to support Mohawk's ERP system implementation focusing on both content and training delivery.
  • Develop Train the Trainer materials for trainers and learners.
  • Development and facilitation of "technical training skills" workshop to prepare SMEs to be trainers.
  • Evaluation strategy to assess trainers' understanding of the content before they deliver training to others.
  • Rubrics or checklists for evaluating how well trainers conduct sessions, ensuring quality and consistency.
  • Contribute to the design and organization of the Project SharePoint site to be set up as the Banner Knowledge Hub supporting training during the project and knowledge management post implementation.
  • Partner, consult and collaborate with various teams across the college: Project change management team, other Technical Instructional designers, Project Managers, Team members including Project Managers, workstream Leads, QA lead, system testers, and SMEs, External vendors, Organizational Development team, Business SMEs, Business SMEs who will be trained to be trainers, Mohawk College employees who will be participants in training as end users, Mohawk College Leadership, Marketing team.
  • Identify training activities, deliverables, work effort and timelines for inclusion into the overall project plan.
  • Effectively manage training activities and deliverables, including prioritization, anticipation and escalation of issues impacting deliverables.
  • Develop measurement and evaluation tools to test the effectiveness of the training program.
  • Adhere to intellectual property, copyright law, and mohawk branding standards.
  • Ensure all materials follow agreed upon templates, formats, including compliance with AODA and UDL requirements.
  • Meet all deadlines providing sufficient time for proofreading as well as review with SMEs.
  • Reviews feedback and evaluations, including input from testers, to make necessary enhancements to the training.
  • Maintain currency with latest trends, strategies, and technologies in learning and development to ensure the continuous improvement of training materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.
