About The Position

The MIRAI Lab (Multisensory Immersive Realities and Artificial Intelligence Lab) in the University of New Mexico’s Department of Computer Science seeks a part-time research team member to support research in human-centered computing and robotics. The role focuses on building and maintaining robotic infrastructure, including data and control transmission pipelines between PCs and robot hardware, and reproducing or adapting locomotion, navigation, and teleoperation policies from existing research pipelines. The successful candidate will contribute to system development, maintain clear technical documentation, and help prepare research findings for publication. The position calls for someone who can read and reproduce results from robotics and machine-learning papers and codebases, communicate technical progress orally and in writing, and manage time across development and documentation tasks. The employee will coordinate with PhD and MS students on shared infrastructure and pipeline dependencies. This is an on-call, hourly staff position on the University of New Mexico’s Main campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is non-exempt, has no benefits eligibility, and offers $22.40–$31.46 per hour. Remote work is not eligible. Specialty licensure or certification may be required as specified by the department. The posting says a successful candidate may be subject to a criminal background check prior to starting work, while the Background Check Required field is marked No.

  • Ability to read and reproduce results from robotics or machine-learning research papers and codebases.
  • Ability to communicate technical progress clearly, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage time effectively across development and documentation tasks.
  • Specialty licensure or certification may be required, as specified by the department.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robot platforms such as ROS or ROS2 and real-time control or communication protocols.
  • Experience with physics simulation environments such as Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, or similar.
  • Familiarity with locomotion or navigation policy reproduction, such as RL-based controllers or imitation-learning pipelines.
  • Experience with teleoperation systems involving human operator input to robot control.
  • Experience with sim-to-real or sim-to-sim transfer techniques.
  • Prior involvement in research documentation or academic publication preparation.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or C++.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain robotic infrastructure for data and control transmission between PC and robot platforms.
  • Reproduce existing locomotion, navigation, and teleoperation policies and pipelines from published research or open-source repositories.
  • Debug and validate sim-to-real and sim-to-sim transfer of control policies.
  • Maintain version-controlled documentation of infrastructure, pipelines, and experimental configurations.
  • Assist with preparing research documentation, technical reports, and manuscripts for publication.
  • Coordinate with lab members, including PhD and MS students, on shared infrastructure and pipeline dependencies.
