About The Position

The Department of Theatre and Dance at California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) is seeking graduate students for Teaching Associate positions for the 2026-27 Academic Year. Teaching Associates are typically responsible for providing classroom instruction and will teach sections of various undergraduate courses. Opportunities may exist to teach other beginning courses within the department. Appointments are conditional based on enrollment and budget, and the department reserves the right to assign TAs to courses appropriate for the program and curriculum. Course offerings may vary, and employment from semester to semester is not guaranteed. The anticipated appointment dates are Fall 2026 (August 21, 2026 – December 23, 2026) and Spring 2027 (January 21, 2027 – May 29, 2027). Students can work up to 20 hours per week, not exceeding 7.5 units per semester.

Requirements

  • Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of Theatre and Dance.
  • Currently enrolled in or admitted to a Cal State LA graduate degree program.
  • Admission to the Master Program in Television, Film and Theatre, in good academic standing.
  • Enrollment in course(s) for the semester towards the degree.
  • Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and have the ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must complete a background check.
  • Must disclose if they have received a final administrative or judicial decision determining they have committed sexual harassment within the last seven years (after meeting minimum qualifications and before an offer).

Nice To Haves

  • TAs in acting classes may be required to complete the TVFT 5150 Teacher Training Course, and a full semester of observation.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a lower division course for the department.
  • Instruct and manage classroom.
  • Create or implement course design and assignment sequence.
  • Prepare course materials and classroom activities.
  • Administer examinations.
  • Assess student performance, including giving course grades.
  • Maintain office hours.

Benefits

  • Initial Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Salary Range: $3,245 - $7,598 (per salary schedule 7/1/2024)
  • The anticipated monthly hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Most new Teaching Associate are hired at the minimum rate.
  • Time base and hours will depend upon need.
