About The Position

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is seeking applications from qualified graduate students for part-time Teaching Associate positions at both the San Bernardino and Palm Desert campuses. The department is looking for experienced, well-organized, and student-centered individuals to teach in General Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, or Analytical Chemistry. Successful candidates will be responsible for teaching foundational level labs or discussions, maintaining active communication with the coordinator, and demonstrating the ability to interact effectively with a diverse student population, including first-generation college students. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working with diverse populations, fostering inclusive environments, and those with relevant work experience and professional capabilities. Appointments are temporary, and staffing decisions are made on a rolling basis. Workload can range from one course up to a maximum of 15 WTU.

Requirements

  • Must be a ‘classified’ student in a Master’s Program in Chemistry or a related field.
  • Must have completed one semester of graduate coursework.
  • Cannot be on probationary status or have any outstanding incomplete grades.
  • Must have a strong command of the subject matter, course design/preparation, instructional material, and organization if teaching classes.
  • Must be able to teach at the Palm Desert or San Bernardino Campus and indicate availability.
  • Must submit a Curriculum Vitae or Resume.
  • Must submit a Cover Letter including a brief statement of teaching interest/philosophy, a listing of any courses previously taught, and a listing of potential courses of interest.
  • Must submit unofficial copies of all postsecondary degree transcripts.
  • Must provide a Reference List with names, telephone numbers, and email addresses of three (3) referees.
  • Must be able to undergo a background check.
  • Must comply with the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act requirements.
  • Must complete Sexual Violence Prevention Training within 6 months of employment and every two years thereafter.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic, or Analytical Chemistry.
  • Inspect lab for safety and preparation issues.
  • Perform experiments indicated in lab manuals/textbooks.
  • Maintain student attendance.
  • Maintain regular communication with the laboratory and recitation coordinator.
  • Maintain scheduled office hours outside of scheduled teaching times.
  • Meet lab coordinator and lecture instructors’ expectations for grading, including returning graded work promptly, recording grades regularly in Canvas, and turning in final lab grades by the last day of final exams.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population.
  • Work effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines.
