About The Position

The Roger Bacon Academy is seeking outstanding applicants to teach Exceptional Children (EC) who have a degree in Education and a passion for inspiring young minds. This role involves providing special education services to students identified as disabled, developing and implementing Individual Education Programs (IEPs), and adapting materials to help EC students achieve academic, behavioral, and social goals. The EC teacher is responsible for monitoring student progress, maintaining records in compliance with state and federal guidelines, and collaborating with parents and other professionals. The position is eligible for an additional Teacher Supplement and is paid based on the North Carolina State Salary Scale for Bachelor's Degrees. A sign-on bonus is provided for applicants certified to teach in NC. The academy offers support through a Beginning Teacher Coordinator and Academic Coaches.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education.
  • Valid teaching certificate from North Carolina or a partnering state in the area of application.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment and classroom tools including computers and copiers.
  • Ability to exert up to 10 lbs of force occasionally to move objects.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge data, people, or things.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.
  • Ability to receive instructions, assignments, or directions from superiors.
  • Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, and lists.
  • Ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, and instructional materials using a prescribed format.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
  • Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly during inclusive activities.
  • Must be on feet at all times during the day.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements an instructional plan compatible with school-wide curricular goals and students' Individual Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Develops, implements, and updates IEPs for students with disabilities using diagnostic information.
  • Provides direct special education instruction to identified students using a variety of teaching methods.
  • Adapts or develops materials to meet student needs.
  • Monitors student behavior, maintains discipline, de-escalates inappropriate behaviors, and teaches appropriate behavioral strategies.
  • Restrains students when necessary, and records and reports restraints.
  • Assists disabled students with personal and self-help needs (e.g., eating, toileting).
  • Communicates with parents regarding their children's educational progress through written reports.
  • Acts as a case coordinator for assigned students, consulting with caregivers, school professionals, and parents.
  • Maintains student records in accordance with North Carolina's Procedures Governing Programs and services for Children with Disabilities.
  • Complies with state and federal education statutes.
  • Treats all students fairly and equitably, interacting effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community.
  • Follows a plan for professional development and demonstrates growth.
  • Creates, implements, and monitors IEP files on their caseload and provides specially designed instruction.
  • Conducts IEP meetings for their caseload and interprets IEPs for the team.
  • Acts as an advocate for students on their caseload and monitors the implementation of goals, modifications, and accommodations.
