About The Position

This position is for an Exceptional Student Population Teacher (EC/ ESP) in the Youth School at Foothills Correctional Institution. The teacher will be a main point of contact providing support and instruction in core academic areas to students pursuing a high school equivalency diploma. This role requires flexibility, a strong work ethic, and top instructional skills. The position is located within the academic school at Foothills Correctional Institution, Morganton, NC (Burke County). The teacher reports to the School Principal and is a core member of the academic team responsible for implementing and monitoring the school’s vision, mission, values, and goals. The teacher must be skilled at organizing and delivering math curriculum to groups of students of all ages, creating a flexible program and a learning environment that supports each student’s abilities and personal growth within a close and minimum custody male correctional facility. The teacher will also perform any additional duties assigned by the principal.

Requirements

  • Documented experience in providing effective instruction at a variety of core areas (reading, writing, math) using appropriate instructional strategies
  • Documented experience utilizing a variety of educational practices and instructional methods (specifically for at-risk students) that align with best practices as well as with student needs
  • Documented experience in utilizing data gathered through formative and summative classroom assessments, both formal and informal in nature, to identify, diagnose, evaluate, and modify instruction to meet the learning needs of individual students
  • Documented experience keeping complete, accurate records and producing meaningful reports for appropriate stakeholders
  • Documented experience using ECATS, Infinite Campus, and other systems to conduct Child Find procedures to locate potential students with disabilities (age 22 and under) who may qualify for special education and related services
  • Documented experience developing and/or revising Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities and managing those plans in ECATS or similar information systems.
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree or above (from an appropriately accredited college) in the teaching area associated with this position
  • Hold a current (non-expired) State of North Carolina Professional Educator’s License (Class Code A, M, S, or D) with certification 25881 EC - General Curriculum (grades K-6) or certification in an area of Exceptional Children (license codes 88), including, but not limited to, EC English, EC Math, Cross Categorical, Learning Disabled, or Special Education: General Curriculum
  • Must possess said licensure or be eligible to obtain an Emergency or Residency teaching license or Provisional Certification in the aforementioned certification area(s). This must be indicated in and attached to your application.
  • Emergency One-Year License Eligibility: the candidate must (1) hold a bachelor's degree with 18 hours of coursework relevant to the requested licensure area (but has not completed a recognized educator preparation program) and (2) does not qualify for a Residency License
  • Residency License Eligibility: the candidate must (1) hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university; (2) have completed 24 hours of coursework relevant to the requested area of licensure OR passed the content area examination relevant to the requested licensure area that has been approved by the State Board of Education; (3) be enrolled in a recognized Educator Preparation Program (EPP).

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in multiple subjects (e.g., ELA and social studies).
  • Experience with educational practices for at‑risk students.
  • Experience preparing lessons, aligned to College and Career Readiness Standards and informed by the NC Standard Course of Study, designed to meet student needs
  • Experience aggregating, disaggregating, and interpreting standardized tests and other assessment results, as well as additional student data, accurately and effectively
  • Experience utilizing data gathered through formative and summative classroom assessments, both formal and informal in nature, to identify, diagnose, evaluate, and modify instruction to meet the learning needs of individual students
  • Experience in using technology-based productivity applications, software programs, and student information systems including, but not limited to, applications within the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Experience communicating effectively with all pertinent stakeholders, in both oral and written formats.

Responsibilities

  • Designing lessons and instructional materials based on best practices in English/ language arts (reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary) and mathematics instruction with clear learning targets and measurable goals aligned with state standards and suitable for instruction of students with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturity and functioning at a wide range of academic levels
  • Providing effective direct group and individual instruction in pertinent English/ language arts (reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary) and mathematics content, designed to meet individual needs, motivate active and appropriate student participation, achieve academic goals, and help students make successful transitions within the academic school, the prison system, and back into society
  • Managing classroom behavior and maintaining an orderly classroom using effective behavioral management techniques
  • Collaborating with fellow teachers and other school personnel regarding students and best instructional practices
