About The Position

At GLOW Academy, the Exceptional Children Teacher is sought for their passion for content, commitment to student mastery, and critical thinking skills to prepare students for college and beyond. The academy believes that potential, not zip code, should determine a student's future trajectory, and that all students have the potential to graduate from high school, go to college, and succeed in life. GLOW Academy focuses on "whole girl" education, fostering leadership and confidence, building family support, and engaging students in a rigorous college preparatory program. This includes emphasis on leadership development, early college and career awareness, health and wellness, and expanded opportunities in science, technology, math, and the arts. GLOW is committed to recruiting and retaining high-caliber educators dedicated to its mission and students, seeking an Exceptional Children's Teacher who values family and community partnerships and is passionate about single-gender education to close the achievement gap for girls. This position will teach students who are on the Future Ready Course of Study, with the main goal of ensuring success for EC students as they navigate this course in preparation for graduation.

Requirements

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in special education
  • Valid teaching certificate in North Carolina (NC Teacher Certification in Special Education)
  • Demonstrated ability to teach the North Carolina Future Ready Course of Study content to students in grades 6-12
  • Demonstrate the ability to build a warm and inclusive classroom environment, implement positive behavior practices, and build strong relationships with students and families to support student success
  • Awareness of educational issues regarding the academic and social development of a diverse population of students, including minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged adolescent girls from high needs neighborhoods/communities
  • Possession of a valid TB test issued by the local county board of health or recognized medical authority is required for employment

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized instruction while supporting students with disabilities, focusing on their unique needs and IEP goals, and fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment
  • Implement a program that meets the needs of each student on their caseload while following the guidelines outlined by GLOW and the State to ensure students progress toward graduation
  • Create a learning environment that is conducive to learning based on student needs while ensuring fidelity in following the IEP
  • Utilize instructional methods to meet the needs of each student while implementing the guidelines set forth by the IEP
  • Make adaptations to lessons and the curriculum where appropriate to meet the needs of individual students
  • Assess students and collect data to report on student progress as outlined in the school and IEP
  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs for each student focusing on behavior, social, and emotional skills
  • Plan appropriate lessons for the teacher assistant(s) and supervise these lessons while providing constructive feedback
  • Demonstrate effective communication with colleagues, parents and students
  • Demonstrate the ability to co-teach with general education teachers across various contents
  • Maintain and improve professional competence while participating in professional developments, staff meetings, serving on committees, and carrying out all non-instructional duties as required by the principal
