TDS Proteins Cell Line Engineering Co-Op

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine•Spring House, PA
•Onsite

About The Position

The TDS Proteins Development Cell Engineering, Analytics & Screening (CEAS) organization is seeking a highly motivated Co-Op to support cell line engineering and research activities focused on improving biotherapeutic protein expression and cell culture performance. In this role, the Co-Op will investigate cellular stress and secretory pathways in CHO cell systems to identify potential expression bottlenecks and support the evaluation of novel targets associated with protein production, folding, and secretion. This opportunity provides hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture, molecular biology techniques, experimental design, and data analysis while collaborating with multidisciplinary scientific teams.

Requirements

  • Completion of Undergraduate Freshman year at an accredited University is required.
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Biology, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, which is reflective of all college coursework.
  • You must not have any Summer Internship contract or other employment commitment that could interfere with the contract dates specified for this position.
  • Previous hands-on experience with aseptic cell culture is required.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret experimental data and communicate scientific conclusions.
  • Ability to work independently as a self-starter while contributing effectively to collaborative team goals.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and priorities.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and must not require sponsorship for employment visa status now or in the future.
  • Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future. Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually requires future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.
  • If you are under 18 years of age, you (the candidate) may need to obtain the necessary working papers or other documentation required by state law to start the assignment, as well as get a parent’s consent for the background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with Western blot analysis, RT-qPCR, and/or digital PCR.
  • Knowledge of or exposure to flow cytometry is a plus.
  • Familiarity with CHO cells, mammalian cell culture, cell line engineering, or cell line development.
  • Basic laboratory skills and previous experience in biological or biopharmaceutical research.
  • Experience with experimental design, execution, and data analysis.
  • Understanding of molecular and cellular biology concepts related to protein expression, folding, secretion, or cellular stress pathways.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership through academic projects, campus organizations, research activities, or community involvement.

Responsibilities

  • Investigating stress and secretory pathways in engineered and wild-type CHO cell hosts to identify potential bottlenecks affecting protein expression.
  • Supporting cell line engineering studies aimed at improving protein production, folding, and secretion.
  • Collaborating with proteomics and other cross-functional scientific teams to evaluate and validate novel cell engineering targets.
  • Conducting laboratory experiments using aseptic cell culture and molecular biology techniques.
  • Supporting experimental characterization using techniques such as Western blot analysis, RT-qPCR, digital PCR, and flow cytometry, as applicable.
  • Analyzing and interpreting experimental results using analytical and statistical approaches.
  • Participating in experimental design discussions and technical problem-solving to address knowledge gaps and advance research objectives.
  • Communicating experimental findings and actively participating in meetings with internal and external collaborators.
  • Maintaining accurate laboratory notebooks and technical documentation in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Providing additional laboratory and project support as needed.

Benefits

  • Ineligibility for severance.
