About The Position

Leads the premium tax function, which includes managing annual state premium tax returns, periodic municipal returns, tax payments and accruals. Also responsible for preparing property tax returns and business license renewals. Manages Certificates of Authority for life companies, acts as Accounts Payable liaison, and supports general tax department projects.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Compliance: Prepare and file over 100 annual U.S. state and territory premium tax returns for the two primary life insurance companies.
  • Compute and schedule accurate, timely estimated premium tax payments throughout the year.
  • Initiate all tax disbursements in required formats ahead of state and territory deadlines.
  • Work closely with internal departments to obtain financial data and coordinate with IT to ensure all premium tax software updates are performed timely.
  • Respond to and resolve information requests, audits, and official notices from state tax authorities, as required.
  • Monitor and adhere to state laws, form updates, and filing requirements to ensure continuous compliance.
  • Generate monthly/quarterly premium tax and TLF accounting accruals for all life insurance entities.
  • Lead Municipal Compliance: Prepare quarterly Kentucky municipal tax returns and execute annual municipal tax filings for jurisdictions across Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana.
  • Prepare annual reconciliations of municipal returns and remit payments to the Kentucky Department of Insurance.
  • Mail annual reconciliations to Kentucky local governments and transmit data electronically to the Kentucky Department of Insurance.
  • Generate and provide to Accounts Payable quarterly journal entry uploads for all municipal tax payments and coordinate with the cash room to ensure all payment remittances and physical checks are accurately sorted, packaged, and mailed ahead of deadlines.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact to resolve information requests and official notices from local taxing authorities.
  • Monitor and adhere to local laws, form updates, and filing requirements.
  • Manage Property Compliance: Prepare, finalize, and file accurate personal property tax returns and extension requests across key jurisdictions, including Gwinnett County, Roswell/Fulton County, and multiple regional locations across various states and Puerto Rico.
  • Request and review fixed asset reports from internal department to create workpapers required for property tax filings.
  • Oversee the review, validation, and timely processing of all personal property tax invoice payments to prevent late fees.
  • Function as the central point of contact to investigate and resolve formal notices and information requests from various local tax jurisdictions.
  • Coordinate Puerto Rico Filings: Prepare workpapers, returns, and payments for the Puerto Rico Volume of Business (VOB) tax, collaborating directly with local personnel to guarantee compliant delivery of returns and extensions.
  • Licensing Renewals: Prepare and execute approximately 100 annual Certificate of Authority renewals for the two primary life insurance companies, ensuring accurate and timely processing of associated licensing fees.
  • Maintain/store the original and/or the current certificate of authority for approximately 100 jurisdictions.
  • Manage Statutory Assessments: Oversee non-tax insurance filings, including guaranty fund, general life insurance, and health assessments, and coordinate other vendor disbursements requested by the SVP of Tax.
  • Track and reconcile all non-tax filing payments to guarantee accurate general ledger classification and appropriate treatment on state premium tax returns.
  • Act as the primary liaison to respond to inquiries, data requests, and formal notices from various state Departments of Insurance regarding corporate licensing.
  • Monitor state statutory laws, premium tax form revisions, and procedural updates to safeguard corporate standing.
  • Communicate with the internal compliance team to provide information requests and verify that all regulatory tax filings and obligations meet legal deadlines.
  • Manage State Tax Allocation: Input state apportionment data into corporate income tax software to ensure multi-jurisdictional allocation.
  • Read, understand and implement updated/new income tax return instructions for each assigned jurisdiction to maintain filing accuracy.
  • Income Returns: Draft and compile assigned state income tax returns and assist with in the processing and submission.
  • Generate and post journal entries for U.S. GAAP income tax provisions, and TLF, as directed.
  • Query general ledger accounts and extract financial datasets to support ongoing tax reporting.
  • Business License Renewal: Gather Data: Collaborate with other internal departments to extract data required for mandatory business license renewals.
  • Prepare and submit annual Gwinnett County business license renewal applications for several business units.
  • Manage and process all associated Gwinnett County business license renewal fees to maintain uninterrupted operations.
