Systems Software Engineer - Object Storage

LT ZERO Asia Pacific•Centennial, CO
•$100,000 - $120,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Systems Software Engineer will contribute to Quantum’s ActiveScale object-storage software, working across the data path that handles incoming S3 requests and moves data to durable storage across NVMe, HDD, and tape. The role includes implementing and extending S3 API functionality and helping improve I/O latency, throughput, and reliability. The engineer will contribute to durability and data placement, including erasure coding, and help ensure correctness in failure scenarios such as node loss, disk faults, and partial writes. The role also involves improving concurrency and throughput across request and storage paths, and contributing to systems that tier data from NVMe through HDD to ActiveScale Cold Storage tape. The position involves writing clean, well-tested code; developing unit, component, and integration tests; using CI; and participating in design discussions and code reviews. Under guidance from senior engineers, the engineer will grow toward independent ownership of components. This is a hybrid role with in-office work at the Centennial, Colorado office Tuesday through Thursday.

Requirements

  • 3 to 5 years of software development experience using Go, Python, C, C++, Rust, or equivalent systems-level fundamentals, with willingness to learn additional languages.
  • Hands-on software development experience with concurrent, networked, distributed, or systems-level software.
  • Solid Linux fundamentals, including basic debugging and performance analysis, and willingness to develop deeper profiling and systems-debugging skills.
  • Understanding of concurrency, locking, asynchronous programming, and memory management basics.
  • Understanding of cloud or enterprise storage concepts and familiarity with HDD, SSD, and NVMe storage technologies, with interest in learning about multi-tier storage systems.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team environment with remote colleagues.
  • Self-motivated, eager to learn, and equipped with a creative problem-solving mindset.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with the Linux I/O subsystem and networking.
  • Knowledge of erasure coding principles.
  • Experience with object storage.
  • Experience with storage protocols and clustering design and development.
  • Experience with APIs and communication protocols such as REST, gRPC, or Thrift.
  • Familiarity with OCaml; parts of the existing ActiveScale codebase are written in it.
  • Experience with the Amazon S3 API, SDKs, and tools.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to features in the ActiveScale data path, handling flow from incoming S3 requests to durable storage across NVMe, HDD, and tape.
  • Implement and extend the S3 API while ensuring correct protocol behavior and efficient request handling.
  • Analyze and help improve I/O pipeline latency, throughput, and reliability.
  • Contribute to durability and data-placement work, including erasure coding, and help ensure correctness under node loss, disk faults, and partial writes.
  • Help analyze and improve concurrency and throughput across request and storage paths.
  • Contribute to systems that move and tier data from NVMe through HDD to the tape cold-storage tier.
  • Write clean, well-tested code and develop unit, component, and integration tests.
  • Use CI and participate in design discussions and code reviews.
  • Grow toward independent ownership of components under the guidance of senior engineers.
