Architect – Object Storage & Database Systems

Wasabi Technologies
•$200,000 - $250,000

About The Position

Wasabi is hiring a Principal Architect – Object Storage & Database Systems to shape the architecture of its cloud storage platform. The role focuses predominantly on S3 core services and the database roadmap, while helping establish their future strategic direction as Wasabi scales its S3 and database functions to support new product tiers and AI-driven usage growth, including read-heavy access patterns. This is a senior, hands-on technical leadership position rather than an architecture-only role. The architect will move between system design, database internals, performance analysis, prototyping, and engineering. They will work with senior engineers and technical leaders on complex challenges involving storage, metadata, scalability, reliability, performance, and data consistency. The role includes building proofs of concept and providing the code and technical analysis to engineering teams, which own the path to production. The posting specifies the US and Canada and states: “Principals only. No recruiters.”

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of hands-on software engineering, database engineering, storage engineering, or distributed systems experience, including experience at a Principal, Staff, Architect, or similar senior technical level.
  • Deep hands-on experience with AWS S3, S3-compatible object storage, or large-scale object storage platforms, and a strong understanding of object storage internals.
  • Expert-level knowledge of database architecture and internals, including relational, NoSQL, and distributed databases, transactions, indexing, replication, sharding, partitioning, locking, caching, and consistency models.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts, including replication, consensus, fault tolerance, high availability, distributed coordination, eventual consistency, and strong consistency.
  • Strong hands-on programming experience in C, C++, Go, Java, Python, or similar languages, with the ability to build working prototypes and production-quality solutions.
  • Proven experience designing, troubleshooting, and improving highly scalable systems that process large amounts of data and operate in high-performance production environments.
  • Strong understanding of Linux, networking, storage I/O, CPU, memory, caching, and system performance, with experience diagnosing complex problems across multiple technology-stack layers.
  • Excellent communication and technical leadership skills, including explaining complex concepts, influencing technical direction, collaborating across teams, mentoring engineers, and bringing forward ideas supported by hands-on testing and technical evidence.
  • Strong understanding of AI technologies and modern AI architecture, with hands-on experience evaluating applications of AI, LLMs, and automation to storage, databases, and distributed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Drive detailed technical solutioning and analysis for forward-looking core-roadmap initiatives, shaping strategic architecture to meet evolving business needs, particularly AI customers’ read-heavy access patterns.
  • Design and influence the architecture of large-scale object storage, database, metadata, and distributed systems supporting Wasabi’s cloud platform.
  • Provide technical expertise in AWS S3 and S3-compatible object storage, including APIs, metadata design, consistency, scalability, durability, and performance.
  • Build hands-on proofs of concept to validate architectural ideas, and hand off PoC code and supporting technical analysis to the engineering teams responsible for production implementation.
  • Evaluate and improve database architectures across relational, NoSQL, distributed, and metadata-focused systems, including indexing, replication, transactions, partitioning, locking, and caching.
  • Troubleshoot complex performance, reliability, scalability, and data consistency issues across storage, databases, Linux, networking, and distributed systems.
  • Research and evaluate database and storage technologies, assess tradeoffs, and recommend solutions based on performance, scalability, reliability, and operational needs.
  • Partner with senior engineers and architects to define long-term technical direction, review system designs, and advance ideas from concept through proof of concept and into production.
  • Communicate complex technical ideas, mentor engineers, challenge existing approaches when appropriate, and introduce ideas that improve architecture and the engineering organization.

Benefits

  • Depending on role eligibility, additional compensation and benefits may include bonus or variable compensation, equity, and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support professional growth and personal well-being.
