About The Position

The Storage Systems Engineer is part of Apple’s Software Delivery & Technologies (SD&T) organization and Enterprise team, which builds and manages services relied upon by Apple R&D. The role develops storage systems, puts storage services into production, and applies reliability engineering to on-premise storage infrastructure used by Apple software engineers to develop, test, and release software worldwide. The storage platforms host Apple source code management and collaboration tools. The engineer drives the design, development, and debugging of storage infrastructure with a focus on reliability, performance, and security. The role also instruments observability across storage and enterprise services, leads service incidents through resolution, and reports service-level indicator and objective (SLI/SLO) metrics for organizational visibility. The work includes deploying and operating open-source storage platforms at enterprise scale, automating CI/CD pipelines, and engineering and testing in Development and UAT environments, with a goal of 99.9% production uptime.

Requirements

  • Experience designing distributed storage systems for reliability, scalability, security, performance, and high availability/disaster recovery (HA/DR).
  • Experience implementing and troubleshooting distributed systems across storage, networking, and security.
  • Incident management experience with customer-facing storage systems in a 24/7 environment.
  • Proficiency in Python, Swift, Go, or a similar programming language.
  • Regular use of agentic AI workflows for incident triage and root-cause analysis.
  • Use of agentic AI coding tools for engineering development and test validation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Computer Science, or equivalent work experience.
  • Excellent judgment and integrity, with the ability to make timely, data-driven decisions.
  • Ability to adapt to changing requirements and anticipate stakeholder needs.
  • Willingness to ask for clarification and build awareness of the broader context.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a storage administrator, such as with NFS filesystems or S3 object storage.
  • Experience with container platforms such as Docker or Kubernetes.
  • Experience with monitoring and alerting tools such as Prometheus or Grafana.
  • Curiosity and eagerness to learn across multiple technology stacks.

Responsibilities

  • Develop software to enhance storage reliability and performance.
  • Design secure architectures and engineer storage infrastructure.
  • Deploy, configure, and monitor open-source storage platforms at enterprise scale.
  • Automate continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) pipelines for storage environments.
  • Engineer and test in Development and UAT environments, with a goal of 99.9% uptime in Production.
  • Implement observability for storage systems, including monitoring, alerting, and metrics reporting.
  • Generate reports on service performance, availability, and reliability metrics.
  • Champion change control management and incident response practices.
  • Drive the design, development, and debugging of reliability, performance, and security engineering for on-premise storage infrastructure.
  • Lead service incidents to resolution and report on SLI/SLO metrics.
  • Communicate engineering project status to stakeholders and follow through on committed timelines.
  • Explore solutions, present risk-versus-reward considerations, and execute the best approach.
  • Collaborate asynchronously with global team members across multiple time zones.
  • Draft RFC proposals, document new processes, and update existing documentation.
