Systems Software Engineer - Object Storage

Quantum Default Brand•Centennial, CO
•Hybrid

About The Position

The Systems Software Engineer will contribute to Quantum’s ActiveScale object-storage software, working on the data path that handles incoming S3 requests and stores data across NVMe, HDD, and tape. The role includes extending S3 API support, improving I/O latency, throughput, and reliability, and helping develop durability and data-placement capabilities, including erasure coding and resilience to node loss, disk faults, and partial writes. The engineer will also contribute to concurrency and throughput improvements and systems that tier data from NVMe through HDD to tape cold storage. The engineer will write clean, well-tested code; use CI; participate in design discussions and code reviews; and grow toward independent ownership of components with guidance from senior engineers. This is a hybrid role, with in-office work at the Centennial, Colorado office Tuesday through Thursday.

Requirements

  • Three to five years of software development experience using Go, Python, C, C++, or Rust, or equivalent systems-level fundamentals; willingness to learn additional languages.
  • Hands-on software development experience with concurrent, networked, distributed, or systems-level software.
  • Solid Linux fundamentals, including basic debugging and performance analysis; willingness to develop deeper profiling and systems-debugging skills.
  • Understanding of concurrency, locking, asynchronous programming, and memory management fundamentals.
  • Understanding of cloud or enterprise storage concepts and familiarity with HDD, SSD, and NVMe technologies; interest in learning about multi-tier storage systems.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team environment with remote colleagues.
  • Self-motivated, eager to learn, and able to apply a creative problem-solving mindset.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with the Linux I/O subsystem and networking.
  • Knowledge of erasure-coding principles.
  • Experience with object storage.
  • Experience with storage protocols and clustering design and development.
  • Experience with APIs and communication protocols such as REST, gRPC, or Thrift.
  • Familiarity with OCaml; parts of the existing ActiveScale codebase are written in it.
  • Experience with the Amazon S3 API, SDKs, and tools.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to ActiveScale data-path features that handle S3 requests and durable storage across NVMe, HDD, and tape.
  • Implement and extend the S3 API, ensuring correct protocol behavior and efficient request handling.
  • Analyze and improve I/O pipeline latency, throughput, and reliability.
  • Contribute to durability and data-placement work, including erasure coding and correctness under node loss, disk faults, and partial writes.
  • Help analyze and improve concurrency and throughput across request and storage paths.
  • Contribute to systems that move and tier data from NVMe through HDD to tape cold storage.
  • Write clean, well-tested code, including unit, component, and integration tests, and use CI.
  • Participate in design discussions and code reviews.
  • Develop toward independent ownership of components under the guidance of senior engineers.

Benefits

  • Health plans for medical and prescription coverage, dental, vision, life, disability, and supplemental medical insurance options.
  • Reimbursement and educational programs supporting healthy lifestyles.
  • Company-matched 401(k) plan.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Program offering Quantum stock at a discounted rate.
