QA Automation Engineer - Object Storage

Quantum Default Brand•Centennial, CO
•Hybrid

About The Position

The QA Automation Engineer will own automated test strategy and quality coverage for ActiveScale object storage. The role designs, builds, and maintains automation for S3, data-path, durability, and data-movement features, including component, integration, system, regression, and failure-injection testing. It also integrates tests into CI pipelines and improves their reliability, execution time, diagnostics, and reporting. The engineer validates S3 API behavior, compatibility, error handling, and data integrity; tests resilience and recovery under failures; and evaluates data placement, erasure coding, tiering, and data movement across NVMe, HDD, and tape where applicable. The role contributes to performance, scalability, and long-running reliability testing, investigates complex failures across distributed components, and builds reusable automation infrastructure. The position participates in design and code reviews, defect triage, and release readiness, working closely with developers and the Software Engineering Manager / Product Owner. It is hybrid, with in-office work at the Centennial, Colorado office Tuesday through Thursday.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in software quality engineering, test automation, or software development.
  • Strong programming or scripting skills in Python, Go, C/C++, or similar languages.
  • Strong experience building and maintaining automated tests for complex software systems.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools to create, extend, debug, or maintain test automation, and ability to critically review generated code and test results.
  • Solid Linux fundamentals, including debugging, log analysis, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience testing APIs and distributed or networked systems.
  • Understanding of concurrency, failure handling, and data integrity concepts.
  • Experience with CI systems and source control.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively with developers and remote colleagues.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with object storage and the Amazon S3 API, SDKs, and tools.
  • Experience testing storage systems or storage media such as HDD, SSD, NVMe, or tape.
  • Experience with failure injection, resiliency testing, performance testing, or large-scale system testing.
  • Knowledge of erasure coding principles.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain automated test coverage for ActiveScale object storage features, including S3, data-path, durability, and data movement.
  • Develop component, integration, system, regression, and failure-injection tests to validate correctness and reliability at scale.
  • Integrate automated tests into CI pipelines and improve reliability, execution time, diagnostics, and reporting.
  • Own the team's automated test strategy and collaborate with developers to define coverage and acceptance criteria early in development.
  • Investigate failures, reproduce complex issues, and help isolate defects across distributed system components.
  • Validate S3 API behavior, compatibility, error handling, and data integrity using AWS S3 SDKs, tools, and automated test frameworks.
  • Test failure scenarios such as node loss, disk faults, partial writes, network disruption, and recovery.
  • Test data placement, erasure coding, tiering, and movement of data across NVMe, HDD, and tape where applicable.
  • Contribute to performance, scalability, and long-running reliability testing of the I/O pipeline.
  • Write maintainable automation code and build reusable test infrastructure for functional, resilience, and failure testing.
  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, defect triage, and release readiness activities.
  • Partner with developers and the Software Engineering Manager / Product Owner to identify quality risks and ensure appropriate coverage.
