The System Safety Engineer ensures the safety and reliability of complex systems by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing mitigation strategies throughout the system lifecycle. The role aligns identified hazards and safety-significant functions with implementing systems, subsystems, hardware, software, and communications, and develops and maintains traceability between hazards, safety requirements, design elements, mitigations, and verification evidence. The engineer supports identification and classification of Safety Significant Functions (SSF) and implementing items, as well as development and management of Software Control Categories (SCC) and Software Criticality Indices (SwCI). The role also supports maturation and maintenance of the FHA and Hazard Tracking System (HTS) as the vehicle design evolves, and evaluates system architecture and proposed design controls against identified hazards and required risk reduction. The engineer works with third-party suppliers to review and assess safety-case evidence, determine whether supplier safety arguments, analyses, assumptions, and constraints adequately address the safety responsibilities of supplied components or subsystems, and identify gaps between supplier safety evidence and vehicle-level safety requirements.
