The Systems Safety Engineer ensures the safety and reliability of complex systems by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing mitigation strategies throughout the system lifecycle. The role aligns identified hazards and safety-significant functions with implementing systems, subsystems, hardware, software, and communications, and maintains traceability among hazards, safety requirements, design elements, mitigations, and verification evidence. The engineer supports identification and classification of Safety Significant Functions (SSF) and implementing items, as well as development and management of Software Control Categories (SCC) and Software Criticality Indices (SwCI). The position also supports maturation and maintenance of the FHA and Hazard Tracking System (HTS) as vehicle design evolves; evaluates system architecture and proposed design controls against hazards and required risk reduction; and works with third-party suppliers to assess whether safety-case evidence addresses the safety responsibilities of supplied components or subsystems. The role identifies gaps between supplier safety evidence and vehicle-level safety requirements.
