About The Position

The Systems Engineer provides systems engineering, requirements management, requirements verification and validation (RV&V) coordination, and system-level integration support to the MSFC Systems Design and Verification Branch (EV72) for the Space Launch System (SLS) Program Systems Engineering and Integration Office (SEIO). The role supports the Integrated Systems and Element Operability Team in SLS design and integration, including interface design definition, requirements development, verification planning, and verification execution. The engineer performs technical analysis of processing requirements and procedures, including Operations and Maintenance Requirements and Specifications (OMRS), Work Authorization Documents (WADs), and associated ground hardware. This analysis covers nominal and off-nominal integrated operations from manufacturing and transportation through ground processing, stacking, integrated test and checkout, and launch. The role coordinates with ground systems and Orion crew spacecraft personnel to define ground operations requirements and procedures. The position serves as an engineering liaison among SEIO, SLS, NASA, contractor organizations, engineering disciplines, system elements, project teams, and payload customers. It supports or leads technical integration, trade studies, decision packages, mission-event and process-improvement studies, and the development and control of integrated architecture documentation. The engineer also coordinates with Safety and Mission Assurance to assess and resolve concerns or hazards, communicates interface-related risks through the NASA Risk Management System, and supports technical recommendations for SLS leadership. Some domestic travel to NASA Centers and customer locations is required, nominally 0–20% depending on project requirements and integration testing activity. The position is based in an office environment and requires extensive computer use and communication with coworkers, management, and clients. The normal workday is 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; minimal overtime may be needed to meet milestones and technical demands. Proof of U.S. citizenship is required.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of aerospace industry experience.
  • Experience with systems engineering, including requirements development and allocation, and development of verification plans, objectives, matrices, and implementation.
  • Experience with digital engineering tools such as DOORS Next Generation, Jira, MagicDraw (Cameo), or similar tools.
  • Experience developing, integrating, and implementing complex aerospace or space systems.
  • Experience reading and working with engineering drawings, interface control documents, configuration documents, or other technical documentation.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer-relations, and presentation skills.
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, accurately, and promptly, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, management, and clients.
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods and operate general office equipment.
  • Ability to travel domestically as required.
  • Ability to meet the position's office-based work and physical requirements, including extended periods of sitting and access between floors and buildings.

  • Degree from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Experience developing requirements, plans, and procedures and executing ground operations for spacecraft or launch-vehicle flight hardware and systems.
  • Understanding of launch-vehicle systems definition, functional-requirement development, and/or design integration.
  • Experience with NASA and/or MSFC spacecraft or launch-vehicle development, processing, ground operations, and ground support equipment.
  • Understanding of NASA systems engineering policies and procedures and familiarity with the SLS Program.
  • Spacecraft or space-payload experience and/or launch-vehicle integration or operations experience.
  • Certification in Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), particularly Object Management Group (OMG)-Certified Systems Modeling Professional (OCSMP) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide systems engineering and interface integration support to the MSFC Systems Design and Verification Branch, Integrated Systems and Element Operability Team, for SLS SEIO design and integration.
  • Support interface design definition, requirements development, verification planning, and verification execution.
  • Analyze processing requirements, procedures, and associated ground hardware for nominal and off-nominal integrated operations spanning manufacturing, transportation, ground processing, stacking, integrated test and checkout, and launch.
  • Coordinate with ground systems and Orion crew spacecraft personnel to identify and define ground operations processing requirements and procedures.
  • Coordinate with MSFC customers, SEIO, SLS elements and disciplines, SLS project teams, and payload customers; participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, and trade studies.
  • Coordinate with Safety and Mission Assurance to ensure spacecraft or payload ground-operations concerns and hazards are assessed and resolved.
  • Support analyses, trade studies, and decision packages, and provide written or verbal technical recommendations to the SLS Chief Engineer, LIMO Manager, or SLS Lead Systems Engineer.
  • Support and/or lead technical integration across NASA Centers, engineering and program/project organizations, and engineering disciplines.
  • Support critical mission-event studies, process-improvement studies, affordability-improvement activities, and other studies focused on design, integration, operations, or life-cycle cost.
  • Support and/or lead documentation and control of the integrated architecture through technical documents and deliverables, including interface requirement/control documents, functional schematics, trade-study reports, and technical briefing or decision packages.
  • Identify and communicate risks associated with interface requirements through the NASA Risk Management System.
