About The Position

The Systems Architect I leads the architecture and technical design of complex material handling systems with broad impact across projects, disciplines, and functional areas. As a subject matter expert on the Bid team, the role translates client requirements, contractual commitments, operational objectives, and business needs into integrated system solutions, owning the technical solution from concept through handoff to execution. The role develops customer-aligned material handling solutions, guides Applications Engineers through the sales process, interprets specifications and contractual requirements, and leads concept design and material-flow analysis to establish the Basis of Design. It coordinates technical reviews across customers and internal disciplines, defines technical scope and cost drivers, and helps ensure feasibility and alignment during the transition from conceptual design to engineering. The Systems Architect maintains alignment between proposed solutions, approved requirements, and contractual commitments through execution handoff. The role evaluates design changes for impacts on performance, operations, cost, schedule, and acceptance criteria, and develops system requirements and functional specifications with design teams. The position is full-time and exempt, with a remote or hybrid work setting and domestic and international travel of up to 25% as business needs require.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of seven years of relevant experience.
  • Professional certification may be required in certain areas.
  • Expert knowledge of customer specifications, industry standards, and material handling system requirements, including automation controls and cross-disciplinary engineering concepts.
  • Proficiency in automation layout and design using AutoCAD (2D) and/or Navisworks, with working knowledge of 3D CAD modeling and drafting.
  • Ability to develop technical documentation, including system concepts, process and material flow diagrams, descriptions of operation, design requirements, and functional specifications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with experience in throughput modeling and capacity analysis using Excel-based models.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to lead technical discussions and coordinate design activities across engineering, operations, controls, and execution teams.
  • Ability to present technical solutions and trade-offs to customers and senior stakeholders, manage tight bid deadlines, and independently deliver high-quality work meeting or exceeding customer expectations.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% as required by business needs.
  • Must possess or maintain required travel documentation, including a valid passport when necessary, and be legally eligible to enter and exit the United States and other countries required for business travel without restrictions that would prevent fulfilling travel obligations.
  • Must be legally authorized to work for any employer in the United States; the position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

  • Interpret customer specifications, standards, and contractual requirements, including scope, inclusions, exclusions, assumptions, clarifications, technical commitments, and acceptance criteria; ensure proposed solutions meet applicable requirements and obligations.
  • Lead development of concept designs, process diagrams, and material flow diagrams, and perform and present material flow calculations using internal tools to establish the Basis of Design, including capacity, throughput, operating assumptions, equipment selections, and process requirements.
  • Lead technical discussions and design reviews with customers and internal stakeholders across engineering, controls, software, operations, project management, contracts, and execution; integrate disciplines and resolve technical gaps, risks, dependencies, and design conflicts.
  • Define technical scope, equipment selections, assumptions, constraints, and cost drivers supporting solution pricing.
  • Collaborate with execution teams during the bid phase to validate technical feasibility, schedule alignment, and the transition from conceptual design to firm engineering.
  • Collaborate with customers to establish weighted solution selection criteria that optimize outcomes for end users and Körber.
