Systems and Integration Architect

Conexon•Kansas City, MO
•Hybrid

About The Position

Conexon is a telecommunications company that partners with Rural Electric Cooperatives to design and deploy fiber-to-the-home networks. Its mission is to expand access to reliable, high-speed internet and phone services in rural communities. The Systems and Integration Architect designs, builds, and operates software, automation platforms, and infrastructure that improve the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of Network Operations. The role independently leads complex technical initiatives across network engineering, systems, observability, automation, and AI-enabled workflows. As a technical owner for major initiatives, the architect translates operational needs into secure, maintainable solutions and works with Network Engineering, the NOC, Systems Engineering, and other internal teams to reduce manual work, improve operational visibility, and build reliable workflows. This is a full-time, hybrid position. The schedule is fixed, with in-office work Tuesday through Thursday. Overtime and travel are not required. The role is classified as non-exempt under the FLSA.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of relevant experience in software engineering, network automation, systems engineering, SRE/DevOps, or a closely related role.
  • Strong software-development experience, ideally including building maintainable applications, APIs, libraries, or automation services.
  • Experience automating infrastructure or network operations through APIs, SSH, REST/GraphQL, Ansible, Terraform, or similar tools.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD, testing, code review, and production support practices.
  • Experience with AI/LLM-assisted software development.
  • Experience with LLM/AI platforms, AI agents, MCP servers, and tool integrations.
  • Ability to independently scope ambiguous problems, evaluate options, communicate tradeoffs, and deliver production-ready solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an ISP, telecommunications, managed-services, or large-scale network environment.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, including routing, switching, DNS, DHCP, IP addressing, VLANs, VPNs, firewalls, and network troubleshooting.
  • Basic Linux administration and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with NetBox, Kea DHCP, Zabbix, Elastic/ElastiFlow, Grafana, or similar operational platforms.
  • Experience administering AI platforms in an enterprise environment.
  • Experience with containerization using Docker or Podman.
  • Understanding of AI security, permissions, audit logging, prompt and tool safety, and human-approval controls for operational actions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research, design, implementation, and operational handoff for projects that support Network Operations.
  • Build and maintain custom applications, APIs, integrations, scripts, plugins, and internal tools.
  • Design deterministic automation solutions using tools such as Python, Ansible, APIs, databases, Git-based workflows, and network automation frameworks.
  • Evaluate, prototype, and deploy AI-enabled workflows to improve operational efficiency, troubleshooting, documentation, change execution, or knowledge access where appropriate.
  • Help administer AI platforms and integrations, including access controls, model and provider configuration, MCP-based integrations, and operational safeguards.
  • Own projects from discovery and vendor or open-source evaluation through infrastructure design, deployment, documentation, monitoring, and support.
  • Help deploy and operate supporting infrastructure when needed, including Linux systems, virtual or physical servers, containers, storage, networking, monitoring, and security controls.
  • Build integrations between operational tools such as NetBox, DHCP, monitoring, ticketing, inventory, vendor APIs, and internal systems.
  • Establish coding, testing, deployment, documentation, and support standards for the automation team.
  • Mentor junior automation engineers and provide technical leadership, without necessarily having direct people-management responsibility.
  • Work with Network Engineering and the NOC to identify high-value opportunities and ensure solutions fit operational workflows.

Benefits

  • Three weeks of paid time off.
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Life insurance.
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance.
  • Retirement benefits.
