System Virtual Platforms Manager

Ericsson•Austin, TX
•Hybrid

About The Position

Ericsson's Silicon team in Austin develops virtual platforms that enable software development and testing before hardware is available. The System Virtual Platform (SVP) is used across Ericsson Radio and Baseband development to reduce time to market. It models Ericsson hardware so software teams can start earlier and run regression in Continuous Integration before and after silicon arrives. SVP is bit-wise accurate at the hardware/software interface, runs production binaries unmodified, and is built with SystemC and TLM. The Austin virtual platform team is part of Silicon Systems within the Product Engineering Unit Silicon and works as one team with engineers in Sweden, sharing architecture, priorities, and delivery commitments. This technical leadership position sets the platform's technical direction, manages the Austin team, and acts as an Operative Product Owner (OPO) for SVP alongside other OPOs. The role is based in Austin, Texas, with a hybrid work schedule and is not remote. The manager leads platform architecture and model development and integration, ensures model correctness and simulation performance, manages the product backlog and release train, and serves as the interface between the platform team and its users. The role also coordinates with architects and suppliers, manages and develops the Austin team, and drives improvements in the platform, working practices, and team competence.

Requirements

  • Several years of professional software design and development experience, with strong hands-on C++ experience, including object-oriented design and templates.
  • Hands-on experience with SystemC, TLM, and software-based modeling, or equivalent depth in a commercial virtual prototyping environment.
  • Strong understanding of hardware/software interaction and hardware concepts including processors, DSPs, memories, interfaces and protocols, interrupts, and GPIOs.
  • Experience with bit-accurate register-level modeling from hardware specifications and a clear account of how the models were proven correct.
  • Track record of maintaining simulation performance as platforms grow and CI turnaround requirements remain short.
  • Experience setting technical direction as a lead, architect, or manager, with ownership of a platform or tool used by multiple teams.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the credibility to represent a platform to organizations that depend on it.
  • Ability to understand how consuming software organizations work, translate their needs into platform priorities, and explain platform details in actionable terms.
  • Ability to work toward shared goals in a fast-paced environment with incomplete, ambiguous, or evolving information.
  • Knowledge of embedded Linux and experience using Linux as a software development platform.
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent education.

Nice To Haves

  • Backlog or product ownership experience.
  • Virtual platform, emulation, or RTL simulation experience in a production semiconductor program.
  • DSP toolchains or baseband and radio software stack experience.
  • Experience with frameworks such as Arm Fast Models, QEMU, Wind River Simics, or Synopsys Virtualizer.
  • Third-party model and simulator supplier management experience.
  • Python or Bash scripting, Git, JIRA, and Jenkins experience.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical direction for the platform, including simulator architecture, software-interface model accuracy, execution speed, and model and release quality.
  • Lead development and integration of SystemC and TLM hardware-component models across processor and DSP subsystems, accelerators, interconnect, memory, interfaces, and board components, including externally sourced models and co-simulation with third-party simulators.
  • Own how models are proven correct, whether used as reference models alongside RTL or as the device under test in UVM, and identify remaining coverage gaps.
  • Maintain simulation performance as the platform grows so that CI turnaround time remains short.
  • Work with other SVP OPOs to manage and prioritize the product backlog, balancing the needs of IP verification, ASIC test software, baseband software, and radio software.
  • Act as the interface between the virtual platform team and its users, translating user needs into platform content and priorities and communicating platform behavior, constraints, and delivery timelines.
  • Clarify user needs and platform requirements when specifications are incomplete or evolving.
  • Own the release train, delivery commitments to consuming programs, and supplier model deliveries from requirements through acceptance.
  • Work with system, SoC, and IP architects to develop models early from specifications and feed platform findings into the design process.
  • Run the platform jointly with the Sweden group through shared architecture, one release train, and joint priorities.
  • Build and sustain networks beyond the immediate organization, work closely with Swedish teams, and drive improvements in the product, ways of working, and team competence.
  • Manage, recruit, and develop the Austin team, own the hiring bar, and balance support workload with platform development.
