About The Position

The System Engineer Intern will support application development for Amtrak’s Asset Condition Monitoring System (ACMS), which manages IoT data from wayside scanners and onboard trains and supports advanced analytics. The intern will use technical knowledge to support, design, develop, and deploy solutions with a moderate level of supervision. The Summer 2027 internship runs from May 17 through August 6, 2027. The position is onsite four or five days per week in Wilmington, with travel requirements of up to 25%.

Requirements

Be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
Be actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science or a related field.
Have completed at least one year of undergraduate academic studies or be at sophomore status at minimum.
Have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
Have knowledge of image processing techniques.
Have knowledge of Python and Java programming languages.

Nice To Haves

Proficiency with Python tools such as Jupyter Notebooks, NumPy, SciPy, OpenCV, and Matplotlib, or MATLAB Image or Signal Processing Toolboxes.
Basic knowledge of databases and SQL.
Basic understanding of a web application framework and associated development processes.
Machine learning or computer vision algorithm development experience.
Experience with OpenCV and PyTorch or TensorFlow.
Experience and knowledge in data analysis and imaging science applications.

Responsibilities

Work closely with vendors and other teams to design, develop, and deliver moderately complex solutions and projects.
Collaborate with customers, business analysts, and team members to understand business requirements and inform the analysis and design of technical solutions.
Write scripts in a variety of languages for problem solving and visualization.
Support, design, develop, and deploy solutions for the ACMS application.
