The Senior System Administrator provides technical and administrative support for all components of server and operating systems and is responsible for planning, selection, implementation, maintenance, operation, and capacity management of computing resources including physical, virtual, and cloud for the county. This position will have the opportunity to work with industry leading systems that include virtualization, blade systems and storage technologies in both the data center and using cloud resources. These functions are provided for multiple versions of hardware, software operating systems, software applications and services. This position is expected to plan for capacity and demand; technology evolution; processes and procedures and customer support to ensure the on-going reliable and cost-effective delivery of services to county employees and the public. The ideal candidate will be a solutions-driven professional who excels in an autonomous environment and is not afraid to ask why or voice a difference of opinion that may lead to process improvements. The position requires a technical understanding of email operations and can provide support to both technical and non-technical users without being condescending. Requirements

  • 3 years of work-related experience in computer databases and systems administration.
  • A bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer and Information Science or a related field. Note an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

  • Networking Fundamentals: NSX or other firewall familiarity
  • Email Administration: Exchange Hybrid and Proofpoint configuration and administration
  • Storage, Backup, and Disaster Recovery (DR): SAN, NAS, and cloud storage
  • Advanced technical knowledge of two or more of the following: Active Directory to include OU Structure and Design in a multi-domain forest, including root cause analysis, Microsoft Exchange 2019/SE/Exchange Online Proofpoint Email Security and Protection, Microsoft Intune and Entra, Microsoft SCCM, Group Policies (GPO), VMware, Windows Server administration, security hardening, and optimization.
  • Experience in systems administration of moderate sized, complex data center systems and services.
  • Technical leadership of small to moderate size teams.
  • Certifications include: Microsoft - Solutions Associate (MCSA); Solutions Expert (MCSE); Solutions Master (MCSM); Technology Specialist (MCTS) or IT Professional (MCITP) – Exchange or Windows Server.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and Operation of Enterprise Technical Systems: Determine appropriate hardware and software configurations for moderately complex to complex systems. Evaluate impacts of new releases and upgrades, implementing a test plan to ensure quality results. Create plans for system expansion and technology upgrades, coordinating directly with vendors, suppliers and contractors to assure timely and appropriate project completion.
  • Troubleshoots Escalated System Failure Issues: Leads team efforts in troubleshooting critical or complex issues related to system performance and reliability. Resolution of complex technical issues, determination of root cause issues and planning and implementing solutions for their resolution. Able to make rapid and effective decisions to localize the root problems, coordinate other subject matter experts, implement changes to restore service and document the problem and lessons learned to avoid repeats of the problem.
  • Demand and Capacity Planning and System Design: Leads the collection of information for capacity forecasts to determine current system utilization and analyzes server system hardware. Maintains and periodically audits user accounts to ensure servers and the windows domain are working efficiently, making recommendations to management for purchases regarding system growth to ensure ongoing quality service.
  • Continual Process Improvements: Oversees the testing, implementation, maintenance, documentation, and development of operational and maintenance procedures. Determines best practices for all areas of system administration. Creates and modifies processes to obtain the best performance and reliability possible. Mentors and coaches junior staff in new technologies and operational tools. Trains others in effective use of the processes and procedures.
  • Enterprise System Planning, Design and Implementation: Executes system design (functional and technical), planning and implementation for enterprise-level systems and services. Leads collaborative efforts with others to design future architectures to meet the evolving needs of the enterprise. Creates road maps for implementation consistent with project needs and budgets.
  • Proactive Planning to Avoid Service Outages: Evaluates systems and services for critical points of failure and proposes and implements solutions to eliminate them and improve system and service reliability. Designs and implements proactive maintenance and monitoring solutions to prevent system and service outages. Performance tuning of services, software and hardware to improve system and service performance.
