About The Position

The Switchboard Operator works in Patient Access at Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital and ensures that incoming phone lines are answered promptly and handled with dignity and efficiency. The operator routes patient calls to the appropriate room or area, places outgoing calls as needed, and handles emergency calls professionally and efficiently. The role also welcomes patients and family members, contacts nursing staff for emergency medical needs, and answers patient and visitor questions. The position works under immediate supervision and follows instructions from designated supervisors and directors. This is an as-needed PRN position with a stated shift of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
One year of relevant work experience.

Responsibilities

Operate a PBX switchboard or telephone console to route incoming calls and place outgoing calls appropriately.
Answer phone lines in a timely manner and handle calls with dignity and efficiency.
Transfer patient calls to the room or area requested by the caller.
Handle emergency phone calls with professionalism and efficiency.
Maintain working knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, procedures, and hospital policy.
Follow direct instructions from the PBX supervisor, ED Patient Access Supervisor, Patient Access Director, Rehab Director, and/or Psych Director.
Welcome patients and family members professionally.
Contact nursing staff regarding emergency medical needs.
Answer patient and visitor questions.
Communicate clearly and courteously, provide accurate information and support, check work quality, and report unsafe conditions.
