About The Position

Harris Regional Hospital, part of Lifepoint Health, is seeking a PRN Switchboard Operator to support hospital operations by managing high volumes of incoming calls, emergency alerts, and communication requests. The operator routes calls, sends emergency notifications and overhead pages, and coordinates communication among clinical staff, emergency responders, and security while maintaining professionalism, accuracy, and HIPAA compliance.

The Switchboard Department provides 24/7 call handling, emergency notifications, and information routing for patients, visitors, and staff. The operator works with departments and emergency services to support safe, efficient hospital operations and timely communication.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with patients, visitors, staff, and emergency responders while maintaining confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
• Ability to remain calm, prioritize, and respond effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced, and emergency situations.
• Strong multitasking abilities, including the capacity to operate multiple communication systems simultaneously.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to maintain accurate logs, records, and documentation.
• Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, in a 24/7 hospital environment.
• Willingness to learn and follow hospital emergency codes, protocols, and paging procedures.

Nice To Haves

• One year of experience in telecommunications, switchboard operations, customer service, or general office work.
• Proficiency with basic computer systems and data entry for paging, logs, and communication tracking.

Responsibilities

• Prioritize and respond to incoming calls, emergencies, and urgent requests professionally and accurately.
• Handle hospital calls, including in-house extensions and patient rooms, and provide clear, courteous assistance.
• Perform in-house paging, code alerts, overhead announcements, and dial-a-page system functions.
• Coordinate communication with hospital staff, emergency responders, and security in accordance with established protocols.
• Maintain and update switchboard records, including patient room assignments, admissions, discharges, and discharged-patient information.
• Maintain disaster procedure files, including employee contact information and emergency communication lists.
• Operate switchboards, radios, phones, paging systems, and computer applications; maintain detailed call logs and records.
