About The Position

This vacancy is for a Survey Statistician (Recent Graduate) position in the Human Resources Division located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line - Suitland Station. This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Survey Statistician (Recent Graduate), 1530-7/9, FPL GS-12, positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience. The Census Bureau is seeking bright, innovative, results-oriented individuals to join our Recent Graduates Program (RGP). The RGP is a one-year program that targets individuals who have recently graduated from qualifying educational institutions or programs. Successful applicants will be placed in a dynamic, one-year career development program. Throughout the program, you will participate in formal training, job assignments and receive a mentor to develop competencies applicable to the Census Bureau's mission and needs. These positions are at the grade 7/9 entry levels, with an opportunity for permanent or term appointment upon successful completion of the program.

Requirements

  • A one-year trial period may be required.
  • If non-competitively converted, the time spent as a Recent Graduate will count towards the probationary period.

  • You will have 48 hours from the date you submit your application to complete the assessment.
  • Recent College Graduates from qualifying institutions within two years of degree or certification (Veterans precluded by their military service obligation, will have up to six years to apply).
  • Students with a transcript with a degree confer date on or before December 31, 2026, will be considered for the Recent Graduate Program.
  • Graduation/expected graduation date MUST be indicated on your resume.
  • To show proof of meeting the Basic Entry Requirements, all applicants MUST submit a copy of their college transcripts.
  • Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc.
  • Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.
  • Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
  • The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
  • GS-07 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 in the Federal service.
  • GS-09 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains communication with supervisors and team members performing work for the assigned programs and projects.
  • Applies statistical techniques and methods in performing project related activities.
  • Identifies survey requirements and develops the specifications, procedures, and materials to support effective data collection.
  • Assists in planning and conducting methodological and evaluative studies relating to survey collection methods to refine the survey process to produce reliable and statistically valid data.
  • Communicating effectively in-person and in writing to diverse audiences, including co-workers and internal/external customers.
  • Reviewing and analyzing data using statistical techniques and statistical software such as SAS, R and/or Python.
  • Assisting in defining survey requirements and providing non-complex technical assistance to evaluate limitations of surveys.
  • Perform routine analysis of data using statistical techniques and statistical software such as SAS, R and/or Python.
  • Develop aspects of survey and sampling designs that ensure uninterrupted flow between data collection and data analysis.
  • Writing procedures, documentation, and/or training guides for data collection practices.
