About The Position

The Surgical Technician Student Extern is an integral member of the perioperative team, serving as the first or second Surgical Technician under the direct supervision of a Surgical Tech Preceptor and the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The extern helps deliver safe and effective care to patients during the intraoperative period. This student role is intended to help Surgical Tech students transition into their Surgical Tech role after completing their program and to support recruitment and retention of Surgical Tech students. Applicants must be enrolled in a Surgical Technology program and have started clinical rotations.

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in a Surgical Technology program and have started clinical rotations.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required within 30 days.

Responsibilities

• Apply principles of asepsis to maintain a sterile environment during surgical setup and procedures.
• Demonstrate competency in selected technical and psychomotor skills, judgment, and appropriate knowledge.
• Provide age-specific care to obstetrical patients in accordance with department policies and procedures.
• Help organize and coordinate supplies and equipment to maintain an efficient and cost-effective department.
• Maintain a safe environment for patients, coworkers, and self, and follow applicable safety and legal requirements and policies.
• Charge for equipment and supplies.
• Participate in operating room turnover and setup.
• Maintain and clean equipment, and identify items requiring repair according to policy.
• Perform sterilization and disinfection, and document loads according to policy.
• Assist with obtaining supplies, equipment, and positioning devices, and help position patients for procedures.
• Perform sterilization of surgical instruments and document it according to policy.
• Perform scrubbing duties, including classes for medical students, residents, and other students.
• Turn over operating rooms and set them up efficiently for the next patient.
