About The Position

The certified surgical technologist works under the supervision of the Director of Surgery. The surgical technician (ST) is a member of the surgical team, who works with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and certified registered nurse anesthetists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during and after surgery. The scrub person handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedures. Must understand the procedures being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Must have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent.
Basic Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel)
Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is must be able to move throughout the hospital to complete patient care and necessary tasks.
Physically demanding, high-stress environment
Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions
Manual and finger dexterity
Hand and eye coordination
Sitting, standing, stooping and walking for extended periods of time
Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs.
Corrected vision and hearing within normal range
Must have full range of motion and be able to bend correctly with knees and lift.

Anticipate the needs of the surgeon in order to expedite the procedure, thus minimizing the patient’s exposure to surgical and anesthetic stress.
Develop and improve skills in the organization of work and in assisting the surgeon by leaning to use economy in time, motion and materials.
Identify emergency situations and use sound judgement in instituting established procedures to respond to emergencies in a calm and efficient manner.
Demonstrate initiative in expanding knowledge of new surgical procedures and subjects relating to the operating room and to the surgical patient.
Understand that each practitioner is individually responsible for her or his own actions.
Recognize legal and policy limits of individual responsibility.
Relate operating room services to the total hospital environment.
Check supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
Scrubs, gowns and gloves
Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure
Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed per policy for counts.
Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants
Helps in draping sterile field
Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure
Maintains highest regard for sterile technique during procedure
Prepares sterile dressings
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room
Assists in preparing room for the next patient
