About The Position

Cary Medical Center has an exciting opportunity for a Surgical Technician to join our dedicated Operating Room team. As a key member of the surgical team, the Surgical Technician works closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and registered nurses to deliver high-quality patient care before, during, and after surgery. In this role, you will be responsible for handling the instruments, supplies, and equipment essential to each surgical procedure. Requirements

  • Surgical Technician experience preferred, however, willing to provide on-the-job training.
  • Active Surgical Technician/Technologist certification preferred
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
  • Meet the unit's annual competency training requirements.
  • Obtain BLS certification within 1 year of accepting position and maintain certification thereafter.
  • Will be required to be part of the call schedule.
  • While on call, must be within a 30-minute timeframe from the hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Consistently demonstrates competency in assisting the surgical team before, during, and after operative procedures.
  • Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment necessary for each surgical procedure as outlined on physician preference cards.
  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure, knowledge or surgical preference, scrub and gown, glove.
  • Prepares sterile table with instruments, sutures, blades, cautery, suction, prosthesis, and solutions needed for procedure.
  • Performs count of sponges, needles, and instruments with circulator prior to surgery and before incision is closed.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants, etc., and helps in draping sterile field.
  • Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure, and prepare sterile dressings, etc.
  • Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure and cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Assists other members of team with terminal cleanup of room in readiness for next patient and applies the principals of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner to provide optimum patient care.
  • Identifies an emergency and uses sound judgement in instituting established procedures to apply them in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Develops initiative to inquire, challenge and explore new procedures and subjects relating to the operating room and to the surgical patient.
  • Provides a safe, efficient environment for the surgical patient.
  • Identifies the structure and function of body parts; recognizes common disorders of the body.
  • Understands aspects of Operating Room techniques and applies them in a professional manner, and related Operating Room technique to total hospital environment.
  • Understands the service provided by the surgeon in relation to the patient's restoration to health and return to the community.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon to expedite the procedure, thus minimizing the patient's exposure to trauma.
  • Differentiates sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments necessary for specific procedures.
  • Displays dexterity in the use of surgical instruments and the knowledge of the step-by-step procedure for specific surgical procedures.
  • Demonstrates proficiency and efficiency for surgeries oriented and trained on.
  • Complies with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
