About The Position

The Surgical Patient Care Tech provides direct patient care under the supervision of a nurse and supports licensed professional nurses in maintaining a safe environment and reducing patient risk. The role gathers vital information and clinical data and reports patient status changes to the nursing team to contribute to patient assessment.

The Surgical Care Unit includes a 12-bed inpatient care unit and a six-bed observation suite. It serves general surgery, orthopedic, pediatric, and medical observation patients. Alton Memorial Hospital is a full-service acute care hospital in Alton, Illinois, offering inpatient and outpatient services.

The position is full-time at 36 hours per week, with night shifts from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., holiday rotation, and every other weekend required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• No prior experience required.
• No supervisor experience required.

Nice To Haves

• Preferred experience as a CNA, nurse assistant, emergency medical technician, or surgical technician.
• Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certification.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care under nurse supervision while promoting patient- and family-centered care in a healing environment.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living; perform vital signs, intake and output, fall and pressure ulcer prevention measures, urinary catheter care, phlebotomy, and point-of-care testing as requested.
• Collect clinical data and patient information, and report changes in patient status to the nurse.
• Assist the nurse with patient and family education.
• Document patient care activities using correct medical terminology.
• Act as a 1:1 patient safety sitter as necessary.
• Ensure supplies and equipment are available to meet patient needs.
• Participate in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
• Participate in professional development.
