The Surgical Coordination Specialist provides coordination for complex surgical events that require care coordination beyond surgery scheduling and the expertise of two or more services. Coordination begins with the patient and family’s first contact and continues through and after the surgical event. It may include preoperative, postoperative, and ancillary testing, such as scans and consultations, as well as coordinating those appointments. The role helps facilitate access to and continuity of care, supports families in addressing and resolving funding concerns, assists with notifying primary care providers, and coordinates appropriate interactions among the provider team, staff, patients, and families to support smooth transitions throughout the stages of the surgical event.
