About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN) is seeking a full-time overnight Support Staff for the Meadowview Navigation Center, which provides safety and support to women experiencing homelessness in Sacramento. VOA-NCNN is a large provider of social services, operating over 40 programs focused on housing, employment, substance abuse, and recovery. The Meadowview Navigation Center, in partnership with the City of Sacramento and the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, offers a safe haven for up to 100 women. This role is responsible for ensuring quality service to program guests in a compassionate and professional manner, engaging in supportive interactions, assessing needs, and performing required duties. The position requires working in a cost-effective and service-oriented manner according to organizational standards.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily work requirements to achieve established objectives of the program.
  • Provide an ongoing source of engagement, information sharing, and problem-solving for guests using a trauma-informed, strength-based, compassionate, and professional approach.
  • Explain program requirements and regulations to new guests and ensure compliance.
  • Continually reorient guests to rules, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, room assignments, and other daily routines.
  • Provide "awake" shift coverage and maintain grounds security and safety at all times, indoor and outdoor.
  • Provide emergency assistance to guests and co-workers as necessary.
  • Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed (e.g., change light bulbs, plunge toilets, clean up accidents/messes).
  • Prepare for new guests, including sanitizing beds and sleeping areas.
  • Clean and sanitize all common areas, including restroom and laundry areas, and staff areas both indoor and outside.
  • Ensure toiletry and cleaning supplies are stocked and secured.
  • Address any behavior issues that create disharmony, criminal, or otherwise non-productive behavior.
  • Use de-escalation techniques as needed.
  • Take pertinent guest issues to the Case Management team.
  • Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating professional behavior including appearance and communication with others.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
  • Complete all shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports.
  • Document and notify management of guest concerns, potential workflow problems, and/or any exceptions to policy that can affect program security or safety.
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to provide adequate/safe staffing coverage and accomplish program objectives.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards to ensure a safe work environment for guests and all personnel.
  • Verify the identity of individuals entering or exiting the premises.
  • Maintain accurate records of client entries and departures.
  • Use handheld metal detectors (wanding) to ensure no weapons are brought onto the premises.
  • Follow strict protocols for handling suspicious items or individuals.
  • Conduct thorough searches of bags and personal belongings.
  • Ensure prohibited items, such as drugs or paraphernalia, are not brought in.
  • Identify and store items prohibited in the shelter.
  • Operate security cameras and monitor activity to ensure the safety of shelter guests and staff.
  • Report and respond to any signs of breaches or misconduct.
  • Coordinate with staff to ensure swift response to medical situations.
  • Facilitate clear and efficient communication between involved parties during medical emergencies.
  • Assist in de-escalating verbal or physical altercations to maintain the safety of all community members.
  • Use de-escalation skills to diffuse tense situations without compromising security.
  • Contact emergency personnel, such as EMS, Fire, or law enforcement, when necessary.
  • Document incidents and actions taken during emergencies; log first responder information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
