About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA NCNN) is seeking a full-time Swing Shift Support Staff for the Meadowview Navigation Center in Sacramento. This center provides safety and resources for women experiencing homelessness, many of whom are victims of violence. In partnership with the City of Sacramento and the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, the center offers a healing environment for up to 100 women. The role involves providing compassionate and professional services to program guests, engaging in supportive interactions, assessing needs, and performing daily work duties in a cost-effective manner. The Support Staff is crucial in maintaining program objectives, ensuring guest safety, and facilitating a positive environment.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide services to difficult guests without ethnic or social prejudices.
  • Ability to use evidence-based practices to end homelessness.
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, women, minorities, and persons with disabilities.

  • Ability to de-escalate crises and assist guests and staff in emergencies.

  • Physically able to safely maneuver weight distribution of a guest in an emergency situation.

  • Specific knowledge and experience with Twelve Step philosophy, mental illness, addiction and recovery, and dysfunctional family dynamics is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing engagement, information sharing, and problem-solving for guests using a trauma-informed, strength-based, compassionate, and professional approach.
  • Explain program requirements and regulations to new guests and ensure compliance.
  • Continually reorient guests to rules, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, room assignments, and other daily routines.
  • Provide "awake" shift coverage and maintain grounds security and safety at all times, indoor and outdoor.
  • Provide emergency assistance to guests and co-workers as necessary.
  • Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Prepare for new guests, including sanitizing beds and sleeping areas.
  • Clean and sanitize all common areas, restrooms, laundry areas, and staff areas.
  • Ensure toiletry and cleaning supplies are stocked and secured.
  • Address behavior issues that create disharmony, criminal, or otherwise non-productive behavior.
  • Use de-escalation techniques as needed.
  • Take pertinent guest issues to the Case Management team.
  • Act as a positive role model with professional behavior, appearance, and communication.
  • Complete all shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports.
  • Document and notify management of guest concerns, potential workflow problems, and/or any exceptions to policy.
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to provide adequate/safe staffing coverage and accomplish program objectives.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards.
  • Verify the identity of individuals entering or exiting the premises and maintain accurate records.
  • Use handheld metal detectors (wanding) to ensure no weapons are brought onto the premises.
  • Follow strict protocols for handling suspicious items or individuals.
  • Conduct thorough searches of bags and personal belongings.
  • Ensure prohibited items, such as drugs or paraphernalia, are not brought in.
  • Identify and store items prohibited in the shelter.
  • Operate security cameras and monitor activity to ensure safety.
  • Report and respond to any signs of breaches or misconduct.
  • Coordinate with staff to ensure swift response to medical situations.
  • Facilitate clear and efficient communication between involved parties during medical emergencies.
  • Assist in de-escalating verbal or physical altercations.
  • Contact emergency personnel (EMS, Fire, law enforcement) when necessary.
  • Document incidents and actions taken during emergencies, and log first responder information.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
