About The Position

A vacancy exists for a Supervisory Special Education Bus Aide/ECCAT Supervisory Special Education Pre K Aide to serve the Transportation Department for Special Education Bus #106 and Hedgesville Early Learning Academy. The aide will meet the driver prior to the morning run at the Bus Garage. Upon completion of the morning run which includes Hedgesville High, Hedgesville Middle and Tuscarora Elementary, the bus driver will drop the aide off at Hedgesville Early Learning Academy to aide in the Pre K classrooms. The driver will then pick up the aide at Hedgesville Early Learning Academy at approximately 2:00 pm to complete the afternoon bus run. Upon completion of the afternoon bus run, the driver will drop the aide off at the Bus Garage. These runs are subject to frequent changes during the school year with additional changes and/or assignments to be made as needed. More specific detail are available upon request. Please contact the transportation department. These buses will serve as a transfer bus as needed. Employees, regular and substitutes, who have never held the classification of aide will be required to pass the state developed aide competency test and if not held, will need to complete the ECCAT certification with the WVDE.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • State mandated competency exam.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, parents, students and administrators.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detail but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to work with emotionally, physically and/or mentally impaired students.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5;
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c;
  • Meet the definition of “Qualifications” in WV Code §18A-4-8b;
  • demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test).
  • Must hold or be eligible to apply for ECCAT authorization (paraprofessional, temporary, or permanent).

Responsibilities

  • Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
  • Assists teacher in routine classroom operation.
  • Demonstrates understanding of student's disability; keeps firm hand and is courteous and fair.
  • Demonstrates initiative and creativity with students and their program.
  • Maintains classroom including preparing bulletin boards.
  • Attends Open house, conferences on a voluntary or as requested basis.
  • Keeps records, writes lessons on the board, and corrects student's work.
  • Loads/unloads wheelchair bound students on bus, and/or waits with students for transportation.
  • Manages and instructs small groups of students when the teacher is not available.
  • Instructs and demonstrates use of exercise equipment and production machinery.
  • Participates in physical activities, which are a part of the students' basic program.
  • Assists students in the restroom as necessary, and may have to change diapers and other hygiene related procedures.
  • Be flexible in schedule and activities throughout the day
  • Help or assist with duplicating and collecting educational paperwork
  • Complete necessary training and in-service as required by the County
  • Supervises students.
  • Assists teacher as needed with planning, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials
  • Conducts learning games with students according to established procedures
  • Maintains regular attendance and complies with State Law and County policies and procedures
  • Maintains an environment that is safe for students and conducive to learning
  • Anticipates and effectively addresses unforeseen crises associated with working with large groups of children
  • Assists with supervision and instruction of children; copying, cutting, coloring, etc., to construct materials and bulletin boards

  • Assists with supervision of student passengers on buses and maintains a safe traveling environment.

  • Assists the teacher in supervision of children in the classroom and to various locations in the school including, but not limited to, instructional areas, the cafeteria, and the bus
  • Participates in bus duty, hall monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty and other duties assigned by the building supervisor or principal
