About The Position

This position is located in the Information Technology and Data Division (ITDD) of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), assigned to either the Field IT Sector Administration Branch or the Computer Services Administration & User Support Branch (CSAUS). The role involves supervising, leading, and training staff who provide technical and operations support to Bureau staff nationwide. The incumbent will oversee IT specialists responsible for rapid technical support to Central Office and field staff, and may lead task forces for critical operational problems. Responsibilities include managing local area network support systems, user access, file access security, and data backup monitoring. Coordination with Central Office support groups (PC Support, Mainframe Support, Development Support, Network Technical Support) and Department of Justice (DOJ) network support organizations (JCN Help Desk) is essential. The position also involves performing benchmark tests of new equipment and applications and advising management on cost-effective alternatives.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is Required.
  • Basic Requirements: Attention to Detail, Customer Service, Decision Making, Information Management, Interpersonal Skills, Oral Communication, Problem Solving, Teamwork, Technical Competence.
  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level. This experience should demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities related to identifying and resolving complex system design, hardware, telecommunications and operating system issues; installing, configuring and maintaining complex Local Area Network (LAN) systems; supervising and providing leadership to staff who perform diagnostic and troubleshooting functions on remote user personal computers and related network equipment; and developing and/or implementing help desk and network operating procedures.
  • Applicants may qualify fully on the basis of licensure, certification, registration, or special training as an alternative to experience. Copies of all such documentation must be provided.
  • Must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2027.

  • Completion of the mandatory courses "Introduction to Correctional Techniques (ICT) Phase I and Phase II" is a condition of employment for this secondary law enforcement position (if applicable).

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, leads and trains staff engaged in providing technical and operations support to Bureau staff nationwide.

  • Performs similar coordination activities between Bureau and Department of Justice (DOJ) network support organizations (JCN Help Desk, etc.).
  • Performs benchmark tests of proposed new equipment and applications.
  • Advises upper management of newly developed or more cost-effective alternatives.
