About The Position

Join FEMA Region 8 External Affairs as our Tribal Advisor. The ideal candidate for this position will build trusted relationships with Tribal Nations, strengthen communication before, during, and after disasters, and turn strategic, solution-focused ideas into more resilient communities while demonstrating cultural sensitivity and respect for Tribal sovereignty. The Tribal advisor will also supervise a small team and have expert knowledge of disaster operations and Tribal needs. In this position, you will serve as a Tribal Advisor on the External Affairs (EA) team and work with other EA Team Members and Tribal Liaisons to serve as the regional liaison between FEMA and tribal nations before, during, and after disasters. Typical assignments include: Advising regional and External Affairs leadership on tribal engagement, consultation, outreach, and related agency activities. Providing technical guidance to FEMA leadership and staff on tribal policies, programs, and consultation requirements. Reviewing and provides input on policies, procedures, guidance, and correspondence affecting tribal governments. Supervising a small team.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Selective Service registration required.
  • Current federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Government credit card.
  • Must be able to deploy with little or no advance notice to anywhere in the United States and its territories for an extended period of time.
  • One full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Experience leading projects or coordinating external communications with tribal governments, federal, state, or local partners.
  • Experience developing briefings, correspondence, or communication products by advising or analyzing policies, programs, or concerns.
  • Experience building relationships or consensus among stakeholders with diverse interests, competing priorities, or perspectives.
  • Experience delivering disaster assistance or coordinating emergency management programs for tribal nations.
