About The Position

Dorchester County Public Schools is seeking a dynamic Supervisor of Prevention to play a pivotal role in ensuring student success. This position, located at the Central Office, is part of a systemwide improvement initiative and the first year of implementation of the 'Believe in Us: Achieving Our Potential Together Strategic Plan'. The Supervisor of Prevention provides strategic leadership for the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of Tier 1 and Tier 2 supports within the district’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). This role ensures all students have access to a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment by leading systemic efforts related to social-emotional learning (SEL), school climate, early intervention, and family and community engagement. Aligned to the DCPS Strategic Plan, this position advances student well-being, belonging, and readiness by building proactive, data-informed systems that reduce barriers to learning and increase student engagement, attendance, and success. This position reports to the Director of Student Services and will supervise School Counselors, Community School Liaisons, and assigned staff.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in school counseling, education, or related field.
  • School Counselor endorsement and Administrator I endorsement or Supervisor of School Counselors endorsement.
  • Must complete either Administrator I endorsement or Supervisor of School Counselors endorsement within one year of appointment if not currently held.
  • Minimum of five (5) years successful experience in education, including experience in school counseling or student services.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in program development, supervision, or instructional/student support leadership.
  • Knowledge of MTSS frameworks, SEL best practices, and school climate systems.
  • Experience using data to inform decision-making and monitor program effectiveness.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build partnerships with families, schools, and community organizations.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work with multiple agencies.
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with precedents, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to apply Board policy to daily work decisions, exercise good courtesy, and tact in dealing with all stakeholders on the telephone, writing, and in person.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer and word processing skills, especially Microsoft Office Suite applications, (Word, Excel, Outlook Calendar, and PowerPoint), Google Drive, etc.
  • Must be able to work independently on routine, complex and confidential tasks.
  • Must maintain good attendance record and be willing to work outside of general working hours occasionally.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Tier 1 and Tier 2 prevention systems aligned to MTSS and the DCPS Strategic Plan.
  • Establishes a coherent district-wide framework for social-emotional learning (SEL) that supports student well-being, engagement, and academic success.
  • Develops and monitors key performance indicators related to attendance, school climate, and student engagement to inform proactive decision-making.
  • Aligns prevention efforts with the DCPS Way instructional framework to ensure conditions for effective teaching and learning.
  • Supervises and evaluates school counselors and community school liaisons, ensuring alignment to district priorities and expectations.
  • Builds the capacity of school-based staff to implement Tier 1 and Tier 2 supports with fidelity.
  • Designs and facilitates professional learning focused on SEL, student engagement, and preventative practices.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of early warning systems for attendance and engagement.
  • Supports schools in identifying and addressing patterns of absenteeism through proactive, data-informed strategies.
  • Collaborates with school teams to implement preventative interventions that reduce chronic absenteeism.
  • Strengthens partnerships with families and community organizations to support student success and remove barriers to learning.
  • Coordinates community-based supports that align with prevention efforts and student needs.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of prevention programs and initiatives through ongoing data analysis.
  • Provides regular reports and recommendations to the Director of Student Services and district leadership.
  • Stays informed of state and federal guidance related to SEL, attendance, and student supports, ensuring compliance and alignment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services.
