About The Position

The Supervisor - Underground Rubber-Tire & Rail Haulage provides frontline leadership for the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of ore, waste, personnel, supplies, and equipment through the underground haulage system. Reporting to the General Foreman, the supervisor translates the approved one-week plan and General Foreman direction into resource-ready daily shift plans; directs rubber-tire haulage, rail haulage, loading, transfer, and related material-handling activities; verifies travel ways, track, loading and dumping points, communications, and equipment readiness; coordinates priorities with Dispatch, Mine Operations, Maintenance, and Technical Services; controls variance within delegated authority; and promptly escalates constraints or changes affecting committed work. The position provides accurate shift information, field feedback, and recovery actions to the General Foreman to maintain planning-to-execution alignment, safe traffic flow, equipment utilization, material movement, workforce accountability, and performance against safety, productivity, quality, cost, and reporting expectations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of progressively responsible underground hard-rock mining experience, including substantial experience in rubber-tire or rail haulage, material handling, dispatch, mine operations, or closely related work.
  • Leadership and interpersonal ability to set expectations, build accountability, coach employees, manage conflict, and collaborate across crews and functions.
  • Judgment and situational awareness to identify hazards, constraints, errors, and changing conditions; evaluate options; and make or escalate timely decisions.
  • Planning and organizational ability to prioritize interdependent work, align people and resources, anticipate constraints, and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Clear oral, listening, and written communication skills to verify understanding and produce accurate, concise, traceable records and recommendations.
  • Adaptability and stress tolerance to maintain sound judgment and professional communication during emergencies, disruptions, and competing demands.
  • Knowledge of underground hard-rock material-flow systems and the safe movement of ore, waste, personnel, supplies, and equipment by rubber tire and rail.
  • Knowledge of the operation and limitations of haul trucks, load-haul-dump units, locomotives, railcars, switching and coupling systems, track and roadways, loading and dumping points, transfer systems, communications, and fueling or charging facilities.
  • Knowledge of underground haulage hazards and controls, including mobile-equipment interaction, right-of-way and traffic management, restricted clearance, speed, visibility, backing, parking, isolation, runaway prevention, derailment, fire, ground conditions, ventilation, and emergency response.
  • Knowledge of MSHA, environmental, training, contractor, incident-reporting, equipment-inspection, workplace-examination, and corrective-action requirements applicable to underground haulage.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in mining, engineering technology, operations management, occupational safety, or a related field.
  • One or more years in a lead, trainer, relief supervisor, dispatcher, or other frontline leadership capacity coordinating crews, equipment, traffic, and material movement across shifts.
  • Experience with both underground rubber-tire and rail haulage, including haul trucks or load-haul-dump units, locomotives and railcars, loading and dumping systems, route and track readiness, dispatch communications, maintenance coordination, and electronic shift reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Reinforce Group Minimum Standards, critical controls, lifesaving behaviors, traffic-management rules, rail operating procedures, standard operating procedures, and approved work methods; stop unsafe work, establish controls, document follow-up, and escalate recurring or high-consequence deficiencies.
  • Maintain visible field presence across active haulage routes, loading and dumping points, transfer locations, sidings, shops, and work areas; review workplace examinations and pre-operational inspections, verify safe conditions, and document coaching or corrective actions.
  • Verify controls for mobile-equipment interaction, rail movement, right-of-way, clearance, speed, parking, chocking, coupling, switching, loading, dumping, backing, pedestrian access, radio communication, and isolation.
  • Identify and control haulage hazards, including impaired visibility, congestion, restricted clearances, poor roadway or track conditions, spillage, derailment risk, runaway equipment, fire, ground conditions, ventilation impacts, and loss of communication.
  • Immediately control and report incidents and near misses, including contact events, derailments, runaways, material releases, and traffic-control failures.
  • Confirm crew members are trained and qualified for assigned work; review qualification records, discuss assignments and hazards, observe readiness, withhold assignments when requirements are not met, and coordinate required training with the General Foreman, Safety, and Training.
  • Translate the approved weekly plan into clear shift expectations through pre-shift review of assignments, decision boundaries, hazards, controls, sequence, resources, and expected results; invite questions and confirm employee understanding.
  • Provide real-time coaching, recognition, and corrective feedback, documenting significant discussions in accordance with documentation best practices and applicable policies.
  • Recommend hiring, development, recognition, performance, or succession actions to the General Foreman.
  • Convert the approved one-week plan and General Foreman direction into a safe and executable haulage shift plan, confirming tons, material destinations, priorities, labor, qualified operators, locomotives, railcars, rubber-tire fleet, access, communications, hazards, controls, and expected results.
  • Direct coordinated movement of ore, waste, personnel, supplies, and equipment by rubber tire and rail, sequencing loading, transfer, switching, tramming, dumping, and return movements to maintain safe traffic flow and support mine priorities.
  • Coordinate with Dispatch and other operational supervisors regarding priority changes, equipment availability, congestion, blasting windows, ventilation restrictions, and shared access.
  • Monitor haulage performance against the shift plan using trips, tons, cycle time, delays, queue time, utilization, and material destination; inspect work, correct operating or quality issues, and initiate recovery actions within delegated authority.
  • Implement approved plan changes by revising crew assignments, equipment allocation, routes, and sequence; communicate changes and controls to affected employees and functions and document the reason and expected impact.
  • Maintain environmental compliance by controlling spills, leaks, emissions, dust, waste handling, and housekeeping along haulage routes and at loading, transfer, fueling, charging, and dumping locations.
  • Complete an accurate shift handoff before shift close, communicating work status, hazards, controls, constraints, equipment condition, completed, missed, deferred, and changed work, resource use, variance reasons, recovery actions, accountable owners, and required follow-up to the incoming team and General Foreman.
  • Validate safety, production, development, quality, workforce, equipment, cost, work-order, and environmental information against source records; correct omissions or inaccuracies before submitting reports through approved systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
