About The Position

The Supervisor - Underground Backfill & Construction leads the safe, efficient, and compliant execution of underground backfill and mine-infrastructure construction. Reporting to the General Foreman, the role translates the weekly plan into resource-ready shift work and directs backfill placement, barricade and bulkhead work, concrete, shotcrete, piping, pumping, excavation, fabrication, and underground service installations. The Supervisor coordinates with Operations, Maintenance, Technical Services, Supply Chain, and contractors to support mine objectives; verifies work readiness and quality; manages variances within delegated authority; escalates constraints; and provides accurate field information for safe sequencing, plan execution, cost control, and reliable infrastructure. The position maintains a visible field presence and reinforces safety standards and controls across active backfill and construction work. It oversees work to approved designs and requirements, responds to incidents and quality issues, coaches and directs crews, coordinates resources and operational interfaces, and ensures environmental compliance. The Supervisor also completes shift handoffs and validates operational, workforce, equipment, cost, quality, and environmental information before reporting.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of progressively responsible underground hard-rock mining experience, including substantial experience in backfill, underground construction, mine support, infrastructure installation, concrete or shotcrete, piping and pumping systems, or closely related work.
  • Current certifications, licenses, or task qualifications required by law or site standards for the assigned backfill and construction scope, or ability to obtain them within the timeframe established by the Company.
  • Leadership and interpersonal ability to set expectations, build accountability, coach employees, manage conflict, and collaborate across crews and functions.
  • Judgment and situational awareness to identify hazards, constraints, errors, and changing conditions; evaluate options; and make or escalate timely decisions.
  • Planning and organizational ability to prioritize interdependent work, align people and resources, anticipate constraints, and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Adaptability and stress tolerance to maintain sound judgment and professional communication during emergencies, disruptions, and competing demands.
  • Knowledge of underground hard-rock backfill methods and construction practices, including paste, cemented, hydraulic, or rock fill as applicable; barricades and bulkheads; forms, reinforcement, concrete, shotcrete, grout, piping, pumping, drainage, excavation, fabrication, and mine-service installation.
  • Knowledge of MSHA, environmental, contractor, qualification, inspection, incident-reporting, quality control, corrective action, recordkeeping, cost control, and continuous improvement applicable to mine support.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in mining, civil or construction engineering technology, construction management, operations management, occupational safety, or a related field.
  • One or more years in a lead, trainer, relief supervisor, or other frontline leadership capacity coordinating crews, contractors, equipment, materials, and interdependent underground work across shifts.
  • Experience with backfill reticulation and placement, barricades or bulkheads, batch or pumping systems, underground concrete and shotcrete, pipe and utility installation, welding and fabrication, prints and drawings, quality testing, maintenance coordination, and electronic shift reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Reinforce Group Minimum Standards, critical controls, lifesaving behaviors, ground-control requirements, energy-isolation procedures, confined-space and hot-work controls, fall protection, lifting and rigging standards, concrete and shotcrete procedures, approved work methods, and stopping unsafe work; establish controls, document follow-up, and escalate deficiencies.
  • Maintain visible field presence across active backfill and construction areas while verifying workplace examinations, pre-operational inspections, ground conditions, ventilation, access, and housekeeping.
  • Verify controls for pressurized backfill and grout systems, line charging and flushing, stored energy, line-of-fire exposure, blocked or failed pipelines, barricade integrity, concrete placement, shotcrete rebound and exposure, welding and cutting, mobile-equipment interaction, suspended loads, and work near open holes or brows.
  • Confirm construction and backfill comply with approved designs, ground-support requirements, specifications, cure times, and release criteria before areas are entered, filled, commissioned, or returned to operations.
  • Control and report incidents, near misses, material releases, line failures, barricade or bulkhead deficiencies, unplanned ground movement, equipment contact, and quality nonconformance; secure areas, notify responders, preserve evidence, support investigations, and complete corrective actions.
  • Monitor crew fit-for-duty status and intervene using approved tools and resources, including reasonable suspicion testing, removing individuals from unsafe situations, and notifying designated functions as required.
  • Translate the approved weekly plan into shift expectations through pre-shift reviews of assignments, decision boundaries, hazards, controls, sequence, resources, and expected results; invite questions and confirm employee understanding.
  • Provide real-time coaching, recognition, and corrective feedback, documenting significant discussions according to applicable best practices and policies.
  • Direct backfill preparation and placement, including area readiness, cleanout, barricade or bulkhead installation and inspection, pipeline installation and pressure checks, material delivery, placement rate, fill level, flushing, sampling, cure or drainage requirements, and documented release.
  • Direct underground construction and rehabilitation, including excavation and setup, forms and reinforcement, concrete and shotcrete, grout, pipe and pump systems, sumps and drainage, ventilation and utility installations, fabrication, welding and cutting, platforms, doors, chutes, guards, and other approved mine infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with Mine Operations, Maintenance, Technical Services, Supply Chain, and contractors on design requirements, work-front readiness, service interruptions, access, blasting windows, materials, equipment, inspections, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Maintain environmental compliance by controlling cementitious materials, contaminated water, spills, leaks, dust, fumes, waste, scrap, and housekeeping, and protecting drains, sumps, water systems, and designated disposal routes.
  • Complete an accurate shift handoff communicating work status, hazards, controls, constraints, equipment condition, completed, missed, deferred, or changed work, resource use, variance reasons, recovery actions, accountable owners, and required follow-up to the incoming team and General Foreman.
  • Validate safety, production, development, quality, workforce, equipment, cost, work-order, and environmental information against source records, correcting omissions or inaccuracies before submitting reports through approved systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
