About The Position

Works under general supervision of the department manager to supervise and coordinate the activities of the Jail Processing department. This position is available to work in a jail environment and requires availability to work shifts, weekends, and holidays. A valid Tennessee Driver's License is required. This position is subject to a background check for any convictions that have a substantial relationship to potential job duties. Only convictions that are substantially related to potential job duties will be considered and will not automatically disqualify the candidate. All employees hired after September 1, 1986, must be residents of Shelby County and shall continue to reside in the County as a condition of their employment. However, this residency requirement does not apply to certain public safety/civil service employees, including Sheriff Deputy Patrol Officers, Deputy Jailers and Dispatchers employed by the Sheriff Department, Correction Officers employed by the Division of Corrections, and Firefighters, Paramedics and Dispatchers employed by the Shelby County Fire Department. This exemption does not include Appointed positions with the Sheriff’s Office, Division of Corrections or the Fire Department.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of experience in a lead capacity in a jail environment
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, or a closely related field; OR An equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
  • Basic knowledge of processing, classifying, and releasing inmates.
  • Ability to evaluate and analyze data, prepare reports and assist in implementing organizational policies.
  • Skilled in organizing work, setting goals and priorities.
  • Ability to supervise and direct activities of a diverse staff, set standards and leads them to work together as a cohesive team.
  • Must be available to work in a jail environment.
  • Must have a valid Tennessee Driver’s License or secure one as of employment date.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, plans, and evaluates the work activities for all functions of the Jail Processing department.
  • Trains and coaches staff on methods and procedures used when processing inmates.
  • Ensures that necessary information is communicated with all agencies regarding inmate release, court appearances, and other matter relating to inmate processing.
  • Evaluates staff and make recommendations regarding performance and discipline.
  • Resolves discrepancies regarding inmate classification, housing, release, or other department matters.
  • Performs related responsibilities or duties as required or directed.
