About The Position

Are you passionate about education and making a difference in the lives of youth? We're looking for dedicated and compassionate educators to join our team for a six-week summer teaching program at the Erie County Youth Detention Center. This is a temporary summer position with working hours from 8 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday, from July 13, 2026, to August 21, 2026. The role involves teaching classes and providing students with a program that enables them to reach their fullest academic, physical, social-emotional, psychological, behavioral, and intellectual potential. Responsibilities include assessing students, providing an education program consistent with state mandates, establishing a positive classroom environment, assisting and counseling students in setting goals, keeping records, consulting with professional staff, participating in professional development, and following the rules of teaching in a Youth Detention Center.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the specific curriculum content to deliver at appropriate instructional levels.
  • Knowledge of principles of educating youth with mental health and/or emotional and behavioral challenges.
  • Knowledge of Individual Education Programs.
  • Knowledge of the principles of student management and supervision.
  • Knowledge of the principles of files and records management.
  • Knowledge of trends and practices in adolescent education.
  • Skills in assessing, evaluating, prioritizing and handling multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Skills in working within deadlines to complete projects and assignments.
  • Skills in assessing, analyzing, identifying and recommending solutions to problems.
  • Skills in producing written reports for internal and external audiences.
  • Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, other County employees, representatives of other governmental agencies and others having business with the courts of Erie County.
  • Skills in computer operations utilizing a variety of commonly used and specialized applications.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
  • New York State Teaching certification for a specified teaching discipline (English, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and/or Special Education, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a High School classroom preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide students with a program that will enable them to reach their fullest academic, physical, social-emotional, psychological, behavioral, and intellectual potential.
  • Assess students, both informally and formally, in order to provide a classroom program.
  • Provide an education program for students consistent with state education mandates and the program's goals and requirements.
  • Establish a classroom environment that provides for the student's academic needs including specific systems of motivation to students.
  • Assist and counsel students in making realistic assessment of their abilities in establishing educational and/or occupational goals.
  • Keep attendance records and other reports/records pertinent to the program.
  • Provide, when warranted, continuous consultation and/or management outside of the classroom to appropriate personnel.
  • Confer with professional staff members, building level administrators, and supervisors regarding the students educational, social/emotional, psychological, behavioral, and intellectual potential.
  • Participate, when appropriate, in continuous professional growth and development related to the field of teaching and/or specific area(s) of expertise.
  • Assist other professional staff members in promoting a team approach to solving problems that occur in the six (6) week program.
  • Follow the rules and expectations of teaching in a Youth Detention Center.
  • Perform any other duty as assigned by your Supervisor.
