About The Position

Marlborough District Council is offering a range of paid internships across different teams for the summer period. These roles provide hands-on experience and the chance to contribute to real projects. Available roles include Environmental Science and Monitoring, Marketing & Communications, Recreation, and Gardens. The council is committed to supporting the next generation of talent in a passionate, community-focused team environment.

Requirements

  • Completed or will have completed at least their first year of study toward a New Zealand tertiary qualification by the time the internship begins
  • Available from November 2026 to February 2027
  • Residing in Marlborough during this period
  • Keen to learn and ready to apply their skills in a real-world setting
  • Good communicators who enjoy working with others
  • Organised and reliable, with a positive attitude
  • Comfortable using everyday digital tools (like email, spreadsheets, and online systems)
  • Can work independently and as part of a team
  • Open to feedback and willing to grow
  • Have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand
  • Undertaking an Environmental Science degree and have an interest in monitoring and/or fieldwork (for Environmental Science and Monitoring role)
  • Creative, organised, and passionate about marketing and storytelling (for Marketing & Communications role)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential (for Marketing & Communications role)
  • Pursuing a degree in recreation or sports (for Recreation role)
  • Experience in practical horticulture skills
  • Passion for plants
  • Enthusiastic about working outside
  • Thirst for learning more about horticulture and botanic gardens (for Gardens role)

Nice To Haves

  • Basic graphic design skills
  • Experience with photography, videography, or video editing
  • Experience with or an interest in website content management (CMS) and digital marketing
  • Proactive, able to work independently, and comfortable taking initiative (for Marketing & Communications role)
  • Speciality in GIS focus and planning (recreational or other) is desirable (for Recreation role)

Responsibilities

  • Undertaking bathing water sampling
  • Low flow gauging
  • Data processing
  • Site maintenance and upkeep of monitoring equipment
  • Surveying
  • SOE sampling
  • Standard river gauging
  • General fieldwork
  • Assisting the Marketing & Communications Manager at Destination Marlborough with marketing & content creation duties
  • Website development
  • Assisting the Parks & Open Spaces team supporting day-to-day operations
  • Working outdoors in award-winning gardens at Pollard Park and Seymour Square
