About The Position

This role is a part of the Canada Summer Jobs 2026 program. Reporting to the Summer Camp Coordinator or their designate, Camp Counsellors will work to develop, implement, and evaluate an eight-week camp program for children ages 4 to 12 years that will engage the campers in exciting social recreational activities. The Camp Counsellors will also ensure the safety and security of the camp.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution.
  • Prior experience working in a day camp setting.
  • Must know how to swim and be comfortable swimming in public pools and in open bodies of water; proof of swimming proficiency through the Red Cross swim program or similar is an asset.
  • Ability to work sensitively with a wide variety of children from low income and new immigrant settings.
  • Able to relate well to both youth and parents in a community setting.
  • Knowledge of child development and the needs of children at various ages.
  • Must be a team player and be able to work well with others.
  • Strong written and verbal English language communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate ideas and concepts; fluency in additional languages that reflect the diverse community in which the program operates will be considered an asset.
  • Must be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
  • Able to provide a “Clear” or satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check as determined by the operational requirements of the program.
  • Be between 15-30 years of age, at the start of the funded position.
  • Be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or someone to whom Refugee Status has been granted/conferred.
  • Have a valid SIN
  • International students, and those who are here in Canada on a work, youth, or visitor visa/permit are not eligible for the program.

Nice To Haves

  • Standard First Aid and CPR training and certification is an asset.
  • Proof of swimming proficiency through the Red Cross swim program or similar is an asset.
  • Fluency in additional languages that reflect the diverse community in which the program operates will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in camp training and orientation.
  • Adheres to Dixon Hall’s mission, vision, policies and practices.
  • Arrive to work in a well-maintained Uniform (unless specified by the Summer Camp Coordinator) and continue to wear the Uniform in a visible manner for the duration of the work hours.
  • Complete all assigned shifts.
  • Work closely with the Camp Coordinator and assist them as needed.
  • Actively participate in developing an eight-week program (eight hours a day) that will be creative, challenging, and fun for children of ages 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, or 10-12 years old.
  • Organize and implement the camp program, as planned.
  • Takes a leading role in ensuring the camp program is organized and implemented as planned.
  • Provides guidance and support to camp counsellors and volunteers.
  • Responsible for morning set-up, monitoring attendance and supervising children during breakfast period and camp program.
  • Completes appropriate paperwork (incident reports, trip purchases, etc…) and reports to Camp Coordinator daily to update the camp’s status.
  • Maintains positive professional relationships with peers, campers, parents, and other Dixon Hall patrons.
  • Responsible for assisting in the evaluation of the program at the end of the season.
  • Counselors assigned to the 8-9 year and 10–12-year age groups are expected to participate in a four-day (three-night) overnight camping experience outside Toronto.
  • Swimming attire is required to enter public pools as part of ensuring the safety of the campers.
  • Provides positive guidance and support to camp volunteers.
  • Assists with supervising children during breakfast period and camp program.
  • Responsible to clean after serving breakfast to children at the start of the day.
  • Helps to ensure safety and security of camp and assists in responding to critical situations.
