About The Position

The Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission (APMC) is seeking two motivated and detail‑oriented Finance Summer Students to support the Finance team across a range of accounting, financial operations, and analytical activities. This role offers hands‑on exposure to core finance functions, including accounting and reconciliations, marketing accounting related to crude oil activities, internal controls, and basic financial analysis. Working closely with experienced finance professionals, the successful candidates will assist with financial reporting, data analysis, documentation of processes, and ad hoc projects, while developing practical skills in a real‑world public‑sector environment. This is a paid, hourly position with flexible scheduling, working approximately 3–5 days per week. The role is based in APMC’s Calgary office and will work on‑site with the Finance team. Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a business, finance, or related field of study.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build relationships between business functions.
  • Proven ability to operate efficiently and effectively in an unstructured, project-oriented environment.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter with ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, proven ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet critical deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with routine accounting activities such as data entry, reconciliations, and support for month-end processes.
  • Support maintenance of financial records, working papers, and documentation.
  • Assist in preparing internal financial reports and schedules as required.
  • Support accounting and tracking related to crude oil marketing and business activities.
  • Assist with revenue tracking, invoice validation, cost allocations, and variance analysis.
  • Help ensure financial information accurately reflects marketing transactions and agreements.
  • Assist with documenting and reviewing internal controls, processes, and procedures.
  • Support basic financial and operational analysis, including trend analysis and KPIs.
  • Help prepare analytical summaries and presentations for internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare accurate and well-organized reports, spreadsheets, and presentations.
  • Interact with internal stakeholders professionally and maintain strict confidentiality of financial information.
  • Provide general administrative and project support to the Finance team as needed.
  • Complete other duties and special projects as assigned.
