About The Position

The Space Systems Analysis and Test Group addresses demanding space-related security challenges through validated analysis, prototyping, and field demonstrations. The group provides unbiased analysis and innovative solutions that shape U.S. national defense strategy. Interns collaborate with mentors and experts across the lab to break down complex problems, contribute to projects related to the nation’s future in space, and clearly communicate key findings. The group’s collaborative, multidisciplinary environment exposes interns to a variety of projects. Depending on project needs, interns may develop modeling software for in-house astrodynamics toolkits; design tools and pipelines to process observational data from optical, radar, and other instruments and compare results with theoretical models; or design and produce developmental hardware and sensors and conduct measurement campaigns using prototypes. Hourly rates vary by academic year or degree completed before the internship begins. The stated rates apply from January through December 2026 and will be reviewed for Summer 2027.

Requirements

  • Plan to complete a BS, BA, MS, or PhD within two years in a technical field within science, mathematics, or engineering.
  • Ability to program in a technical environment, such as MATLAB, Python, C++, or Java.
  • Strong technical skills, intellectual curiosity, and eagerness to tackle open-ended problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information to a broad audience.
  • Interest in modeling and simulation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret-level DoD security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Selected candidate is subject to a pre-employment background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with mentors and experts across the lab to break down and solve complex problems.
  • Clearly communicate key findings.
  • Depending on project needs, develop modeling software for astrodynamics toolkits, including work involving satellite propagation, guidance laws, sensors and observations, state estimation, and tracking.
  • Depending on project needs, design tools and pipelines to process observational data from optical, radar, and other instruments; analyze collected data and compare it with theoretical models.
  • Depending on project needs, design and produce developmental hardware systems and sensors and plan and conduct prototype measurement campaigns supporting analysis studies.
