About The Position

Waymo’s AI Foundations team develops machine learning solutions for open problems in autonomous driving, with the goal of safely operating Waymo vehicles in dozens of cities and under all driving conditions. The team’s focus areas include reinforcement learning, learning from demonstration, generative modeling, Bayesian inference, hierarchical learning, and robust evaluation, and it fosters collaborations with other research teams in Alphabet. As an intern, you will partner with industry leaders on impactful projects while applying your knowledge and developing your skills. This role focuses on designing and conducting experiments on large-scale generative or foundation model training recipes, analyzing model evaluation metrics to identify performance bottlenecks and optimization strategies, and collaborating with researchers and engineers to integrate novel techniques into production training pipelines. The position is a hybrid onsite internship. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the role is filled.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, AI, Robotics, or a related quantitative field.
Solid background in deep learning, transformer architectures, and generative modeling.
Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow.

Nice To Haves

Publications at top-tier AI/ML conferences, including NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ECCV, or ICCV.
Experience with distributed training across multi-node GPU/TPU clusters.
Familiarity with autonomous driving perception, prediction, or planning problems.

Responsibilities
