About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Summer Day Camp Counsellor to assist in the development, planning, and implementation of summer activities for children aged 7-12. This role involves supporting families by providing meaningful activities and supervision for their children. The Counsellor will participate in both on-site programming and a week-long trip to The Salvation Army Camp Sunrise at the end of July. The position requires adherence to The Salvation Army's core values, ensuring the safety and well-being of participants. This is a Fixed Term Contract Position funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program, with specific eligibility requirements for applicants.

Requirements

  • At least one year of post-secondary education (an alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable).
  • Related studies or equivalent work experience with youth.
  • Full License and Clean Drivers Abstract is an asset.
  • First Aid/CPR Certificate is an asset.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is an asset.
  • Clear and current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Pass applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Applicants must meet Canada Summer Jobs program eligibility requirements, including age and legal status criteria. Individuals requiring employer-specific work authorization are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, or lead skills workshops for children in areas such as drama, sports, cross-cultural understanding, spiritual practices, and volunteering/community service.
  • Work alongside food security programs, interacting with families in need for registration referrals and providing operational support.
  • If applicable, work with the team to lead children and youth in responding to the Gospel through presentation and prayer.
  • Develop relationships with families to encourage the well-being and development of children and youth.
  • Provide emotional and spiritual care to enrich participants' lives and support their potential, in conjunction with the Corps Officer/pastor.
  • Participate in staff training and development.
  • Adhere to security procedures to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information.
  • Assist in the planning, administration, and operations of the annual Back to School event.
  • Support pre-planned program activities for the community, such as food bank services, crafts, sports, games, music, homework stations, Bible-based devotions, community church, and meetings.
  • Work in a team setting, supporting various tasks and activities.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all matters pertaining to program participants.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures related to the programs.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned, including set up, clean up, and communication.
