About The Position

The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is seeking to establish a pool of qualified substitute teachers for the 2026-2027 school year. MSD offers an inclusive, language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21, utilizing a bilingual education approach with American Sign Language and English. Substitute teachers will work on an as-needed basis to cover planned lessons and manage student behavior. Assignments may vary and may fall outside the substitute's primary background or training.

Requirements

  • High School diploma, plus 60 college credits, or a verified former Howard County teacher.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language and written English required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population including underserved students.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Knowledge of the Deaf Community preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Follow the lesson plan left by the teacher and ensure students complete all assigned tasks.
  • Maintain a safe environment.
  • Keep students under direct supervision at all times.
  • Leave information concerning the day's activities for the teacher.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of students and school personnel information.
